GMB’s Charlotte Hawkins mortified after begging co-star not to ’embarrass’ her

Charlotte Hawkins was less than impressed with her co-star Richard Madeley after he set her an embarrassing challenge live on Good Morning Britain.

Hawkins, 48, returned to present the ITV show on Tuesday (April 2), together with her co-host Madeley, 67. The pair had been running through the main stories of the day during the show, before turning their attention to one of their in-studio guests.

After going through the headlines, Charlotte and Richard sat down to chat with First Dates legend Fred Sirieix. The suave Frenchman was in the studio to discuss his upcoming series The World Cook.

The show takes sixteen chefs from across the world who have honed their craft of preparing national dishes and puts their technical ability to the test. Each week, the competition is taken to a new country, with cooks being asked to make iconic dishes from other nations with precision and class.

Former I’m A Celebrity star Fred joined Charlotte and Richard on the sofa to chat about the show, as well as his time in the jungle. However, as the interview got underway, Madeley quipped that he would be setting Charlotte a challenge – a move that immediately filled her with dread.

“Charlotte Hawkins is not a presenter to step away from a challenge,” Richard began as Charlotte sighed in exasperation. “You’re going to ask our next interviewee the first question in French.”

Hawkins, clearly embarrassed by the question, was left red-faced as she lamented: “Oh God, I can’t believe you’ve said this.” As Richard introduced Fred to the sofa, Hawkins looked terrified as she glanced into the camera.

After showing a clip of the show, Charlotte explained: “So what happened is that last time I saw Fred, I said I’ve been trying to relearn my French and I’ve been practising on this app. I said to him that next time I would see him, I would speak to him in French.

“What I didn’t realise was that was going to be live on television, did I?” Charlotte added, before sarcastically turning to Richard and blasting: “Thank you!” Richard was quick to turn attention away from him as he repeated: “Just one question!”

Hawkins – who did not shy away from the challenge – went on to ask Fred the first question in French. “Bonjour, Fred – ça va?” she enquired, asking how he was doing.

He responded that he was very well and asked her the same question. After some initial hesitation, she responded that she also felt very fine, before quickly reverting back to English.

“But for everybody who doesn’t speak French, it’s just for their benefit we should continue this in English,” Charlotte said. “Personally, I would be able to carry on in French!” before carrying on with the interview.

Later, when the interview ended, Charlotte tried to bust out the French once again, but failed as her brain could not bring anything to mind. “I was gonna try and do a bit of French then but it’s all escaped me; all the excitement – next time,” she quipped.

Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
