It’s been 28 years since the first film was released, which saw Sandler play a hockey player (Happy) who becomes an unlikely golfing sensation thanks to his killer swings. it’s all in a bid to save his grandmother’s home by bagging the cash prize from a tournament.

The hilarious flick starred the likes of Carl Weathers, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Frances Bay. It had a $12million (£9.19m) dollar budget and became a commercial hit, scoring over $41m (£31m) at the Box Office.

The sequel is a Netflix co-production. Sandler has reunited with long-time collaborator Tim Herlihy, the original writer of Happy Gilmore, and Happy Gilmore 2 will be the ninth script they’ve worked on.

But original director Dennis Dugan won’t be directing the sequel. Instead, What We Do In The Shadows director Kyle Newacheck will be in charge.

Little is know about the plot of the sequel at this point, but Sandler previously hinted that Happy will be joining a senior golfing tour. It suggests he’s still into golf despite stopping his grandma from being put into a retirement home.

It’s confirmed that Christopher McDonald’s villain Shooter McGavin is back. It’s rumoured NBA player (and Taylor Swift’s flame) Travis Kelce could appear as well as Sandler’s Uncut Gems collaborator Benny Safdie.

Back in March, McDonald said Sandler had begun writing the sequel and that things were going rather well. He said: “McDonald, you’re gonna love this,” McDonald said. ‘He shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. He did show me that, and I thought, ‘Wow, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans, demand it, damnit!”

Sandler recently said of the sequel, which is shooting in Jersey: “The idea that me and my buddy Tim Herlihy had and the more we talked about it and scene to scene worked on it, it built, and we feel very strong about the movie itself.

“We’re happy where it’s at and this is an exciting time for us. I don’t know how all of a sudden our brains said, ‘Let’s do that.’ It just kind of happened.”

In August, he told The Tonight Show of the script: “It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We came up with an idea — we wrote our a**es off.”

The release date hasn’t been revealed, but it’ll stream on Netflix.
