Helen McCrory asked ‘are you alright’ in final TV appearance before tragic death

Helen McCrory sparked concern in her final TV appearance before she died.

The beloved 52-year-old Peaky Blinders star sadly died in April 2021 after a “heroic” battle with breast cancer. Her husband, actor Damian Lewis, confirmed she died “peacefully” at home, surrounded by her loved ones.

It came as a shock as Helen – who would have turned 55 today (August 17) – had kept her diagnosis private while she was undergoing treatment. But in her final interview on Good Morning Britain a month prior to her death, it seems the signs of her illness were present as she looked pale and had a croaky voice.

Helen appeared with Damian to discuss their charity work with The Prince’s Trust, which supports young people who are struggling. GMB host Kate Garraway noticed Helen’s croaky voice and asked her: “Are you alright, Helen? You sound a bit croaky. Have you got a sore throat?”

But Helen simply smiled and suggested nothing was wrong, replying: “I’ve got children!” Kate laughed and replied: “Oh you’ve been shouting at them!” with Helen adding: “And I’ve got no makeup artist and no hair dresser!”

Kate paid tribute to Helen following the actress’ death. “Terrible news devastated for @lewis_damian and for their children and all the family. A wonderful woman and together a wonderful pair who were always fun to interview and a great measure just to be around. Sending so much love to you all xxx.”

Damian penned a heartbreaking tribute to Helen when he announced it. He wrote on X: “I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.

“She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”

Helen starred as Polly in Peaky Blinders

Helen had an incredible career, with two of her most famous roles being matriarch Polly Gray in the Peaky Blinders TV series and Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. She also had a successful stage career, and was nominated for an Olivier for her role as Rosalind in As You Like It in 2006.

Helen and Damian shared their daughter Manon and son Gulliver.
