Here Comes Honey Boo Boo made a huge splash when it launched in 2012, somehow managing to become a bit of a cult hit despite scathing reviews.
Featuring child beauty queen Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson and a lively cast of characters including her mum Mama June, the US reality series certainly caught the imagination. It ended up running for four series, and also spawned spin-off Mama June: From Not To Hot.
The show eventually wrapped in 2014, but 10 years on its stars are still legendary in the world of reality TV. We have a look at what some of them are up to now.
Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson
Alana is now 18 and has shed her Honey Boo Boo title now that she’s all grown up. She went on to dabble in a bit more reality TV, appearing in Dancing with the Stars: Juniors in 2018, but was eliminated in the fourth week. She also appeared on The Masked Singer.
However, Alana is now pursuing life outside of showbiz and is thought to be living in Denver, Colorado with her boyfriend. She is currently at university studying nursing.
Mama June
Mama June stayed in the headlines after the show wrapped as she battled drug problems, but went on to seek help in rehab.
She has also become known for her eye-popping transformation when she lost more than 300lbs. The star underwent bariatric surgery in 2015 and documented her weight loss transformation in Mama June: From Not To Hot. But earlier this year she told fans on Instagram that she had started to regain some of the excess pounds and that she was going to start on weight loss injections.
“As you know, back in May 2015, I had a gastric sleeve surgery,” she said on Instagram. “I used to weigh 550 pounds. So on my own, I went from 550 pounds to 311 pounds. The day that I had my surgery. And in six weeks, I went from 311 all the way down to 195… Well, I have noticed over the last, like, year and a half, that I’ve really put on weight.”
June has also got married since her time on the original show, tying the knot with partner Justin Stroud in 2022.
She continues to be a reality TV regular, with the From Not To Hot show rebranded as Mama June: Road To Redemption and then Mama June: Family Crisis.
Anna Marie ‘Chickadee’ Toney
Tragedy struck the family last year, when June’s daughter Anna died at the age of 29. It had emerged in March that the TV star had been diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal carcinoma. She passed away in December, at her mum’s house, just months after marrying long-term love Eldridge Toney.
Mama June shared the sad news on Instagram, telling fans: “With a breaking heart, we are announcing that Anna is no longer with us … She gave one hell of a fight for 10 months, she passed away with her family around her.”
Jessica Louise ‘Chubbs’ Shannon
Jessica was late to the party, as she was away studying when Here Comes Honey Boo Boo started. Now 27, she does pop up in her mum’s show these days.
Little is known about Jessica’s private life but she is thought to be in a relationship with a single mum. Like her mother, she has dropped a significant amount of weight over the years and is sporting a sleek new look.
Mike ‘Sugar Bear’ Thompson
Alana’s dad split from Mama June after the show and although he did go on to marry again it’s thought he is currently single.
He has completely changed his look since his time on the series, with reports that he’s had his teeth done and that he’s undergone a hair transplant.
“I haven’t stopped looking in the mirror,” Page Six quoted him as saying in 2022. “I don’t recognise the man in the mirror.” “I never thought I could have a smile I would be proud of and I really love the Botox because I look a lot younger.”
