David Ames has been a staple of Hollyoaks since he first joined the Channel 4 soap in June 2023.
Taking on the role of Carter Shepherd, headmaster of Hollyoaks High School, David has already found himself at the center of several plots including dealing with his sexuality and the conflicts it posed to his religion. This includes his ongoing affair to John Paul McQueen, whilst being married to Maxine Minniver, played by Nikki Sanderson.
However, away from the village, actor David has been at the centre of a blossoming romance between him and fashionista Gok Wan.

From 2014 to 2018, the pair romantically dated and things seemed to be going from strength to strength until the pair decided to remain good pals. So, as his character Carter continues to face issues on the soap, Daily Star looks as David’s relationship with Gok Wan.
First meetings

How to Look Good Naked host Gok, 48, first met David when the actor was still appearing on BBC drama Holby City. Portraying medical professional Dr Dominic Copeland on the show, Gok and David initially met and remained good pals.
At the time, fashion expert Gok had told reporters that he was too busy for love, as his TV career continued to soar. However, as the pair continued to meet up after their first chance meeting, it was clear that there had been sparks between the two.
Things continued to progress throughout 2014 and into 2015, when the pair were spotted at a number of events together cosying up to each other. The glasses-wearing duo were even seen at a barbecue together, as they both began to overcome their demons regarding body issues together.

Things reached their peak for the couple in 2016, when at a party hosted by Diva magazine, Gok was spotted wrapping his arms around David, getting intimate together. Speaking to good pal Daniel Hughes, a journalist at the Daily Mail confirmed that David and Gok had been together for some time.
In a post uploaded to their social media channels, the pair were also seen at events together with Gok’s pet dog Dolly taking in the summer sun. The pair were inseparable and regularly gushed over each other – in private, as the pair never went public on their relationship.
The love between the pair, however, eventually turned to friendship, and after four years together, the pair eventually decided to call time on their relationship. Following this, Gok’s love life has remained a secret matter, as has David as he moved on to pastures new after leaving Holby City.

Despite their relationship fizzling out, both David and Gok continue to be incredibly good friends. In 2018, not long after the pair called it quits, David shared a snap of the twosome beaming to the camera, wishing the “absolute beaut” a happy birthday, before declaring: “Love you heaps.”
Later on, in an interview with YOU magazine, Gok credited his friendship to David as one of his biggest successes. He explained: “One of my closest friends is actor David Ames.
“When he comes to my house, we sit and watch the comedy show The Golden Girls together,” he continued. “I can’t think of anything I like to do more than sit and watch him laugh; it is one of my favourite things in the world.”
The pair continue to interact with each other still on social media, with David gushing over a picture of Gok, alongside Ab Fab star Harriet Thorpe and friend Allison catching up in the pub in 2022. Taking to the caption, Ames beamed: “Three of my favourites,” which he then added a red heart alongside.
The most recent snap of the pair came in February, when both Gok and David – together with some other good pals of the twosome – hit the town on Manchester’s Gay Village. Posting the pic to his Instagram feed, David once again gushed: “Love these boys!”
