Donald Sutherland has died aged 88.
The legendary Hollywood actor, whose career stretched over seven decades, received numerous accolades over the years including a Primetime Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Critics Choice Award.
He was cited as one of the best actors never to have received an Academy Award nomination, however, In 2017, he received an Academy Honorary Award. A statement from CAA said: “Acclaimed actor Donald Sutherland died today in Miami, Florida, after a long illness. He was 88 years old.”

On Thursday (June 20), his actor son Kiefer Sutherland, best known for his role in TV series 24 and films Phone Booth and The Three Musketeers, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, share heartbreaking news with fans. He wrote: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.
“Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Sutherland burst onto the scene in the late 1960s before starring in several 70s classics such as Klute, MASH, Don’t Look Now Ordinary People and Animal House. Fans have since taken to social media to pay tribute to the movie star.
One fan penned: “There has never been a single moment in my life where I watched something Donald Sutherland was in and was not delighted to see him. An absolute dye cast Hollywood legend. Thanks for everything, especially Kiefer. RIP.”
Another added: “RIP Donald Sutherland, one of the all-time greats..” A third person said: “Can’t believe the news today… #DonaldSutherland … a legacy that will remain in the hearts of so many… Thanks for all the great performances. You were loved and you will be missed. RIP.”
Sutherland’s most recent roles included The Hunger Games film franchise as dictator president Coriolanus Snow, and as a judge in the 2023 TV show Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
He won a Golden Globe for the television movie Path To War and another gong along with an Emmy Award for the the mini-series Citizen X. Sutherland is survived by his third wife, Francine Racette.
