Iconic Annie child star unrecognisable after quitting fame for surprising job

Annie’s Aileen Quinn looks totally different more than 40 years after playing the curly-hair orphan.

The actress was propelled into the spotlight at 10 when she took the title role in the 1982 movie, having beaten 8,000 other girls for the role. But she is now 53 and has a surprising new career as a rock star.

Aileen is now in a band called Aileen Quinn and the Leapin’ Lizards and has completely transformed since her Annie days. Recent snaps show her with long brown hair straight hair and a fringe, a very different look to Annie’s red curls.

She is also rocking an edgier look these days as she performs with her group, with stage shots showing the star in leopard print and with flowers in her hair.

Aileen took a break from Hollywood after finding fame in Annie, with her last screen appearance in children’s show The Great Space Coaster in 1986. She didn’t appear on screen again for more than 20 years.

The actress previously told Fox News that one of the reason she got back to her normal life after the movie was that her parents valued education so much. “My mom was a school teacher for many years so education was always very important,” she said in 2022.

“They were very strict on the set about me getting my three hours of school a day. And when I came back from filming, my teachers didn’t cut me any breaks. Don’t get me wrong, they loved it, they were happy for me, and they wanted my autograph too, but they were like, ‘Welcome back to test-taking. Be your usual A+ student’.”

She added that she “wanted to get back to some normalcy”. “I wanted to go to college and explore my other options,” she said. “I wanted to learn about the world. I lived in a foreign country and got to experience that for a while. I got to learn a different language and explore another part of the world that was different… I was able to grow up, have a normal life, date and see the world, which felt right to me.”

After college, Aileen started to focus on stage rather than screen work as well as her music. She has appeared in productions such as Oliver!, Twelfth Night and Fiddler on the Roof.
