A number of high-profile BBC celebrities have been caught up in a series of shocking scandals this year, with Jermaine Jenas’ surprise sacking just the latest.
Former Premier League footballer Jenas was axed from the broadcaster after allegations of “inappropriate behaviour”, thought to involve text messages.
The BBC confirmed that the Match of the Day and The One Show star was “no longer part of our presenting line up” and launched an investigation following the claims.

But Jenas’ departure from the BBC is just the latest in a string of disastrous scandals to hit the corporation, including allegations of bullying against Strictly stars and Huw Edwards’ criminal conviction.
Jermaine Jenas’ sacking
After news broke of Jenas’ sacking, a source told The Sun: “This is a categorical nightmare for the BBC. A complaint was raised concerning Jermaine’s behaviour. After some immediate routine enquiries, the decision was taken to take him off air and terminate his contract.
“The BBC’s new Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski has been heavily involved in this whole process and is adamant that his new house is firmly in order, and there are no skeletons. At the present, the feeling is he won’t be back on the BBC.”
It has also been reported that a large mural featuring the former The One Show presenter alongside Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Alex Scott has been removed from Media City HQ in Manchester. Prior to this news, there was talk that Jermaine was pipped to be Lineker’s successor on Match Of The Day.
Huw Edwards pleads guilty
Back in July, the BBC took another hit following the scandal surrounding BBC News presenter Huw Edwards. He was the broadcaster’s highest-paid and arguably most respected newsreader up until April 2023, when a complaint was made against him.
On July 31 2024, Huw Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.
The court heard that Edwards had been involved in an online chat with an adult man on WhatsApp between December 2020 and August 2021, who sent him 377 sexual images. 41 of these were indecent images of children.
Prior to this Huw was in his heyday at the BBC, with perhaps his most notable appearance being the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth back in September 2022. While delivering the country’s biggest news in decades, Edwards appeared close to tears as he addressed the camera.
After admitting the criminal charges, Edwards will be sentenced in September.
Strictly bullying scandal
The BBC was also rocked with the recent Strictly scandal, in which a number of allegations were made against professional dancers from Strictly Come Dancing. Graziano Di Prima was fired from the hit competition show, in which celebrities are paired up with professional dancers in an attempt to win the coveted Glitterball Trophy.
Claims arose that he assaulted his former partner Zara McDermott during rehearsals with allegations claiming that he kicked, hit and spat on the former Love Island contestant. He released a statement following the accusations: “I deeply regret the events that led to my departure from Strictly. My intense passion and determination to win might have affected my training regime.”
“Respecting the BBC HR process, I understand it’s best for the show that I step away.”
Co-star Giovanni Pernice also left the show and in June the BBC confirmed that he is not part of the 2024 lineup after bullying allegations were made by former partner Amanda Abbington. The dancer denies all the allegations made against him.
