Jason Manford accused of shoplifting after Butlin’s pick ‘n mix disaster

Comic Jason Manford revealed he was accused of shoplifting when he first went on an all-inclusive holiday – after he misunderstood his mum telling him everything was free.

The West End actor and TV star was on his first family week away at a Butlin’s when he was shocked to learn he didn’t have to pay for using the facilities, after his mum told him things at the resort were free.

Manford said: “This is Pwllheli in Wales and it’s Butlin’s. I was about ten, and my brothers, eight and seven, we’d never been on holiday before.

“We said to my mum – because there was like a rollercoaster, there was the swimming pool – we said ‘Can we have some money?’ She said ‘What for?’

“I said ‘for the rollercoaster and the swimming pool’. She said ‘it’s all included’. We went ‘Oh my God’. So we ran out, went on the rollercoaster, got back in the queue.]

“And then a couple of mornings later my dad answers the door and security from Butlin’s is there. He goes ‘Are three lads living here, there’s been reports of some shoplifting’.

“Dad went ‘Not my lads, they’re good boys’. We’re all sat there, big pick ‘n mix, buckets and spades. Dad went ‘Have you robbed them?’ We went ‘Mum said everything was free’.

“It turns out – this is the Angela’s Ashes bit – our holiday was actually paid for by a charity called The Lord Mayor’s Fund which gives holidays to underprivileged kids.

“Years later I was doing a charity gig at the Apollo for the Lord Mayor’s Fund and I just mentioned it in passing to my mum and she said ‘you know that holiday we had…’.

“So full circle, I have paid back for that Pick N Mix – took me 20 years.”
