Jennifer Connelly’s finger was ripped off by a chimpanzee.
While filming for the 1985 film Phenomena, the monkey took a chomp at Connelly’s hand and the star was rushed to hospital. Luckily her finger was reattached to the joint.
It has since been reported that Tanga, the chimpanzee, “proved difficult to direct” as director Dario Argento was afraid that the performance would come across as comedic to viewers. After the finger-biting incident, Jennifer spoke about the ordeal on Late Night With Conan O’Brien and revealed that the chimp became aggressive to her from that moment.

Due to her aggressive behaviour, some scenes required a body double for the Labyrinth actress. It was also reported that Tange somehow managed to escape and was lost for three days before she was lured back into captivity with food.

Connelly landed her first leading role in Phenomena, which follows an American girl at boarding school in Switzerland. She soon discovers she has psychic powers and she learns how to communicate with insects, but later uses them to track down a serial killer who is terrorising the school and murdering women.
In the film the chimpanzee played Inga, a primate who was kept by forensic entomologist John McGregor. After Jennifer’s character ran into the woods, Inga found her and led her to John who noticed her bond with animals.

Some time after it was released, the film was purchased by New Line Cinema who cut over 20 minutes from the film. The shorter version was released under the name Creepers, which was eventually distributed in the UK a year later.
Jon Pareles wrote a review for The New York Times and quipped: “The best acting is by an expressive, resourceful chimpanzee – definitely this year’s Best Supporting Primate.” After landing her role in the 80s flick, Connelly went on to have a glittering acting career.
