Katy Perry has caused outrage among her fans as she performed at the MTV VMAs.
The legendary awards show returned to screens on Wednesday (September 11), with iconic rapper Megan Thee Stallion taking us through the show. As with any MTV show, controversy slipped into the programme, with hitmaker Katy Perry being no exception.
During the show, the songstress behind hits such as I Kissed A Girl, Wide Awake and Bon Appetit was given the honorary Video Vanguard award. This award recognises the power of using music videos to show artistry, which Katy gracefully accepted.

She then proceeded to sing a number of her biggest hits for the crowd, including California Gurls, Firework and Teenage Dream. But as well as this, she also performed the latest release in her upcoming album cycle in the midst of the hits – and fans were not happy about the new style Katy is going for.
In the medley, Katy debuted her new song, I’m His, He’s Mine – a collaboration with rapper and singer Doechii, which is set to be released this Friday (September 13). But while performing the track, some fans were left completely shocked as she acted out a rather sexually suggestive dance in front of millions.
Amidst the performance, the singers ended up reclining on platforms, facing each other with their legs spread apart, simulating the scissoring position. As the pair performed, the couple were drenched in blue and pink lights – commonly referred to as “bisexual lighting” because it matches the colours of the bisexual pride flag.
Fans immediately took to social media to berate the singer and blast her for simulating a lesbian sex act on stage. A clip of the performance, which was uploaded to MTV’s Instagram account also added some new camera angles that showed off both women’s privates, which only made the disgust from fans worse.
The performance caused Katy’s fiancé Orlando Bloom to grin at the raunchy antics going on onstage, but many fans accused Katy of “queerbating”. The term refers to acting in a way that suggests a desire for same-sex romps, all the while being straight and using it for fame and fortune.
Fuming fans let their feelings be heard soon after the performance ended, with one fan admitting: “This is honestly so disappointing.” A second user, horrified at what they had watched, said: “I hate what this world has turned into.”
A third account took direct aim at Katy, branding her as “desperate”, adding that her “career is over” after the MTV stint. Whilst a fourth bemused viewer simply asked: “What the literal f*** did I just watch?”
This was not the first time Katy left viewers in shock on the night however, as she brought up her menstrual cycle after picking up her award. Addressing the crowd, Katy beamed: “Thank you! I did all that on my first day of my period, can you believe it?”
