Legendary music producer who worked with Nirvana dies after suffering heart attack

Steve Albini, best known for collaborating with Nirvana, has died aged 61.

The indie rock icon and record producer died of an heart attack in his recording studio, Electronic Audio, according to Pitchfork. His death was confirmed by the studio’s staff members.

He served as the frontman for underground rock banks such as Shellac and Big Black but was known for being an impressive force in the studio. Albini also recorded Nirvana’s third and final album, In Utero, and the Pixies’ debut album, Surfer Rosa.

Albini continued to work with Nirvana long after the death of their frontman, Kurt Cobain, in 1994, working with the band on several box sets and their self-titled greatest hits album. Just before his death, Shellac was gearing up to release their first album since 2014, To All Trains. The Album is scheduled to be released on May 17.

He was married to a woman named Heather Whinna, who worked as a filmmaker. According to The Guardian, the couple met in the 1990s. Following the news of Albini’s sudden death, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the musician, with one person writing: “Steve Albini has had as much influence and impact on my creativity as any artist. He tuned my ears by engineering so many of my favourite albums of all time. I’ll post some, but this first one is most representative of my mood right now.”

Another person added: “RIP Steve Albini An absolute giant who reshaped a corner of music to his own ideal.” Someone else said: “Extremely saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Steve Albini. I found this video when I was 15 or so and it quite literally changed my life. Sending love to his family/friends/peers/the Chicago music community.” A fourth social media user posted: “I just can’t find the words about Steve Albini at the moment. Shellac were the band. I was texting friends yesterday about the Wire cover, about the new album, about seeing them again, for the hundredth time. This is just too much.”

In 2010, Albini revealed that he was not an avid consumer of media. However he watched a lot of cat videos on YouTube and avoided seeing feature films. According to a 2022 interview, Albini avoided drugs and alcohol. He stated that his father was an alcoholic,and that made him aware of his “own vulnerability to addiction”.
