Liam Payne and his One Direction bandmates have returned to the charts after the singer’s tragic death.
All five of the iconic boyband’s studio albums have returned to the UK top 40 as fans continue to mourn Liam, who died last week. The 31 year old singer tragically fell from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This week, the band’s 2013 album, Midnight Memories, featuring hits like Best Song Ever and Story Of My Life, has re-entered the UK albums chart at number 13, according to the Official Charts Company. Also making a comeback are Made In The AM (2015) at 21, Four (2014) at 22, Take Me Home (2012) at 25, and their debut album, Up All Night (2011), at 38.

Two songs from the group, Night Changes and Story Of My Life, have also re-entered the top 10, reaching new peaks on the singles chart at numbers six and nine respectively. After One Direction announced their indefinite hiatus in 2016, Payne embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album, LP1, in 2019.

His song with Quavo, Strip That Down, has re-entered the singles chart at 41, while his collaboration with Rita Ora, For You, is at number 43 this week. His final solo release, Teardrops, has made its chart debut at number 85.
In 2008, a young Payne auditioned for The X Factor at the tender age of 14, belting out Frank Sinatra’s classic Fly Me To The Moon. Simon Cowell, one of the judges, advised him to return in two years, reports the Mirror.

Heeding this advice, Payne returned in 2010 and impressed the panel with his rendition of Michael Buble’s Cry Me A River. This led to him being grouped with four other solo artists at boot camp, ultimately forming the global sensation One Direction.
Following his tragic passing, an outpouring of tributes has been seen for Payne, who shared the stage with Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. His former bandmates released a joint statement expressing their devastation and deep sense of loss, stating that the “memories we shared with him will be treasured forever”.

A post-mortem examination revealed that multiple traumas and “internal and external haemorrhage” were the cause of Payne’s untimely death. His death is still being examined – it’s been reported that toxicology reports claim he had drugs such as cocaine in his system when he died.
