Liam Payne’s death ‘inconclusive’ after One Direction star’s tragic balcony fall

An update has been given on Liam Payne as his autopsy continues to be examined.

Liam tragically passed away on Wednesday (October 16) after falling 40ft from his third floor balcony at the luxurious CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. An initial post-mortem showed he died from multiple injuries after the fall from the balcony.

But the pop star’s tragic passing is currently being treated as “inconclusive” by officials investigating his death. Prosecutor Marcelo Roma has ordered comprehensive tests, including biochemical, histopathological, and toxicological, to find out whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

It has been reported that Liam will stay in Argentina for at least another two weeks while further tests are carried out. Liam’s dad Geoff flew out to Argentina to pay his own respects to his son and to arrange for Liam’s body to be repatriated to the UK in order to prepare for his funeral.

Argentinian investigators are waiting for the test results from toxicology reports to be returned before handing Liam’s body back to his family. Local media added that once the initial lines of enquiry are finished, his remains will be handed over and brought back to Wolverhampton.

As a result, Liam’s funeral will take place in November – when his body returns to the UK. According to Argentinian newspaper Clarín, the UK Embassy is working with Liam’s family to bring the Strip That Down singer’s remains home.

In a statement, the embassy said: “We are supporting Liam Payne’s family and are in contact with local authorities.” It comes as preliminary results from the autopsy revealed that the fall that killed Liam had left him with several serious injuries.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed in a statement issued on Friday (October 18): “The head injuries were sufficient to cause death, while the internal and external hemorrhages in the skull, chest, abdomen and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death.” Meanwhile, a number of toxicological tests are being carried out to determine how under the influence Liam was when he fell.

Hotel staff and other guests became concerned for the star after he displayed erratic behaviour in the moments leading up to his death. One frantic 999 call from hotel staff ordered “just an ambulance” in case something was to happen; the ambulance arrived at the hotel seven minutes after Liam went over the balcony.

It comes as the One Direction star’s family release a statement paying tribute to their dear son and brother. In a joint statement, the family said they were “heartbroken” at his loss.

“Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul,” they added. “We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
