The Masked Singer’s costume designer Tim Simpson has spilled the beans on backstage drama at the ITV show.
He revealed that one of this season’s celebs, introduced as Weather, refused to wear their mask just hours before going on stage. Weather turned out to be legendary singer Dionne Warwick, who was the first to be booted off the competition.
Despite the initial hiccup, she described her time on the show as “great fun”. Speaking to Metro, Tim shared: “We had a rather dramatic moment where Weather, Dionne Warwick, came on and she tried her mask on and she just took it off and said, ‘I’m not wearing that’, because we have a particular type of head cradle inside the mask.

“We had about four and a half hours before she was due on stage and she had point blank refused to wear it as it stood.” Tim had to quickly fix the mask in Dionne’s dressing room, leaving the show’s producers really worried.
He said: “I had to rip out the head cradle, at which point she looked at me and went, ‘Okay, now we’re in business,’ as the producers looked on just with horror, like sheer horror, as I’m tearing apart this mask that we’ve spent so many weeks working on.” Dionne wasn’t sure about the mask at first, but after the changes, she said: “I don’t think it’s gonna fit, but this is the best I’ve got right now. It’ll be fine.” And when it did fit, she was happy and ready to go, saying: “That’s great. Let’s crack on.”
Tim explained how important it was for Dionne, who is 83 years old, to feel good for her performance: “They’ve got to go out and sing and they’ve got to perform and so they’ve got to be feeling all right about it and she just didn’t feel comfy in it. It didn’t fit her head and it needed a rethink very, very fast.”

After Dionne left the show, a rep said she always aims for perfection in her work. Dionne herself said she had fun on the show but couldn’t hide her unique voice, sharing: “When I was asked to do the show, I said, ‘Aw yeah, I’m going to have some fun. But I can never try to disguise my voice.'”
The Masked Singer airs Saturdays on ITV1 and ITVX
