Missing Dr Michael Mosley ‘may have fainted’ near ‘very high cliffs’, mayor says

Officials in Greece have said that missing This Morning doctor Michael Mosley might have fainted near a dangerous area of the island he was staying on.

Mosley, 67, had been holidaying on the Greek island of Symi in the Aegean Sea when he was reported missing on Wednesday (June 5). According to reports, the doctor had been on a hike on the Greek island but was declared missing when he failed to return home.

A search operation has now been opened close to St Nicholas Beach and nearby Pedi Beach, close to where Michael was last seen. He was said to have left the home at 1:30pm local time, but was then reported missing by wife Dr Clare Bailey, 62, at 7:30pm.

Whilst police continue to search the island for his whereabouts, Symi’s mayor Eleftherios Papakalodoukas has suggested that he may have had a health issue due to strong temperatures in recent weeks. The island beauty has been battered by the sun recently, with temperatures reaching a scorching 35C on Thursday (June 6), as the search operation got underway.

Papakalodoukas explained that the trail that Mosley was likely to be on would have been particularly dangerous due to the high gradient and hot temperatures. This, when coupled with dehydration, could have caused Michael to faint, increasing the risk and requiring immediate medical help.

However, he also said that the route runs through “very high cliffs” and rocky terrain, suggesting that Mosley may have slipped and fallen into the water. Greek officials have now been given a deadline to try and find Michael, unless support from the Greek or UK governments is received, the mayor explained to LBC.

Papakalodoukas explained that prior to his disappearance, witnesses had said that he was speaking to locals in the local area along his journey. Now, helicopters, dogs and drones are combing over the island to find any trace of the island, which forms part of the Dodecanese island chain.

Local police in Greece released a statement that, when translated from Greek, said they received reports of the “disappearance of a 67-year-old British national” on Wednesday. An investigation has been opened and units from all emergency services are being deployed to find him.
