Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix documentary looking at the sport of polo has divided opinion among fans, with many believing the show is glorifying cruelty to horses
Netflix users have slammed Harry and Meghan Markle’s new documentary for promoting “animal cruelty”.
The couple have released their latest TV project – Polo – which has already divided viewers. The series, which looks at the sport of polo, was part of a major deal between the Sussexes and Netflix to produce “content that informs but also gives hope” to viewers.
Polo, which stars Prince Harry as part of the documentary, looks at the history of the sport and the overall fall from grace the sport has suffered over the years. Netflix bosses had been hoping that fans would take to the sport in the same way they did for other documentary series such as Drive to Survive and Last Chance U, which helped to revive their respective sports.

However, viewers have been less than pleased by the new series that hit the streaming platform earlier this week. Fans who have now watched the show have since hit out at the couple for supporting the sport, which fans have slammed as cruelty towards horses.

After watching the series, one user fumed: “Flagging for cruelty to animals, this sport needs to be as illegal as dog fights.” A second added: “Just from watching a few hours, you cannot comprehend everything in that time; it was glorified. What about the cruelty to the horses?”
A third account wrote: “Watched the whole series because it’s Harry. But the real cruelty of horses that this account will never highlight is that about 200 horses die on British racecourses every year, and an unknown number are killed in training or because they fail to make the grade.”
Other fans slammed the “depraved past time” and cast shame onto Netflix for glorifying the sport. Some viewers branded the series as “dull” and “boring”, while others attacked Meghan for ruining the Netflix “documentary” style.
Harry and Meghan commissioned the documentary to look into polo as it is a large passion for the royal, despite having little time to play the sport. Prince Harry was also billed to be starring in the show, and while he makes a cameo in the series, within the first few minutes of the show, this is one of the only times that viewers spotted Harry in the entirety of the series.
The prince later makes several small appearances, as he is seen conversing with the likes of stars Adolfo Cambiaso in the last two episodes. However, Harry took a back seat in the project, allowing for wife Meghan to direct the show, culminating in the tense final instalment.
Harry and Meghan signed a $100million deal to create series for the streaming platform as a way to keep their income after resigning from senior royal duties in 2020. The couple have since released a number of other series on the platform, with each continuing to divide viewers’ opinion.
Polo is available to stream on Netflix.
