Netflix fans sickened by ‘creepy’ age-gap romance in show as they ‘can’t look’

Netflix’s Umbrella Academy has come under fire due to an age-gap romance in the final series.

The sci-fi drama follows a group of estranged siblings with superpowers who reunite to uncover the mystery surrounding their father’s death and try to stop an apocalypse. The show, starring Elliott Page, has just aired it’s fourth and final season.

But fans aren’t happy about the new relationship that was revealed between characters Lyla, played by 35-year-old Ritu Arya, and Five, played by 20-year-old Aidan Gallagher. The pair become trapped in a seven-year time loop during their quest to get home.

There are several things making this romance creepy to many. Firstly, the first time Lila meets Five, he is a child. In the first season, Five is 13 years old but, as a teleporter, becomes stuck in a post-apocalyptic future for decades.

When he is reunited with his family, he’s 64 years old but stuck inside the body of an 18 year old. What’s more is that Lila was married to Five’s brother Diego and shares a family with him.

So viewers were shocked when they found out that the pair had sex and shared several kisses – despite the confusing age dynamics. The strange subplot sees the pair trapped in a subway tunnel for years.

One wrote on X: “I just… can’t with that Lila/ Five stuff. I really can’t – why are they doing that. I wanna cry and throw up and scream and unsee that”. Another wrote: “I couldn’t even watch it I looked away”.

A third said: “I had a feeling it was coming and I kept praying it wouldn’t happen”. A fourth admitted: “Five and Lila are in love and I feel a little nauseous”, and another added: “Five and Lila is straight up creepy”.

Some went as far as to ask the show’s creators to apologise. One complained: “We need an apology from The Umbrella Academy writers for whatever that atrocity is between Five and Lila… I’m cringing so hard right now.”

The show’s creator Steve Blackman said he felt Five needed to have a love story but wasn’t sure how the fans were going to take it. He told Netflix: “I felt that Five had to have a love story.

“I mean, he’s a 64-year-old man in the body of an 18-year-old. So we thought he could have a love story. And I thought, ‘How can he have a love story? He’s not the kind of guy who’s going to date’.

“I thought Five needed to be with someone, whether it be a boy or girl. We thought we had an opportunity with Lila. And we tried it. I don’t know how the fans are going to take it.”
