Netflix’s latest crime drama has had viewers hooked – with one unusual scene in particular standing out. Now, cast of the new mini-series have opened up about the chaos it caused behind-the-scenes.
The Perfect Couple was added to the streaming service on Thursday and is currently the most-watched show on the platform. Starring in the series is Nicole Kidman alongside Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Ishaan Khattar, Jack Reynor and Liev Schreiber. The show centres around events leading up to a grand wedding – which ends in tragedy before the big day.
Amelia Sachs (Hewson), is on the brink of marrying into the affluent Nantucket Winbury family. Amelia’s future mother-in-law happens not to welcome the union. On the eve of the wedding, a body is discovered on the beach, leading every member of the party to turn into a suspect. Amid the death family secrets are uncovered.
While viewer reactions have been mixed, there’s one scene which has stood out – the opening credits. The sequence in question sees the full cast performing a choreographed dance routine outside the Winbury family residence, set to Meghan Trainor’s song Criminals.
But, in an interview with RadioTimes.com, the show’s stars Eve Hewson, Ishaan Khattar and Jack Reynor revealed that not everyone was totally on board with the idea. The trio laughed as the dance scene was brought up, as Reynor said: “I was a big naysayer on that one.”
Hewson added: “There was a lot of meltdowns. There was a lot of, like, ‘I am not doing this, I’m calling my agent.’ It was pretty funny. I was thrilled, because I’m just, like, probably the most amazing dancer.”
Hewson continued: “I was like, ‘This is my moment to shine, and I can’t wait.’ But everybody else, except for Ishaan, who is an actual professional dancer, everyone else was having a meltdown.”
Khattar said the sequence was “a doozy”, while Reynor admitted that “by the end of it, everybody actually kind of had fun”. Hewson said: “Everybody was like, ‘I’m not doing it.’ And then, by the end of the day, I turned around and all the boys were like, ‘This is, actually, this is amazing.'”
Khattar added: “Also, may I say we wrapped out the show pretty much on that note, and it was, I think, the best note to leave.”
Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss the scene. One reckoned: “More shows should really do a fully choreographed pop number at the top of every episode that is completely at odds with their tone.”
A second said: “the dance sequence in the perfect couple is the greatest thing i’ve ever experienced.” (sic)
A third chimed in: “Is anyone watching The Perfect Couple on Netflix? I LOVE the intro of them dancing. It’s so clever.” (sic)
A fourth agreed: “The coordination dance for the intro is elite #ThePerfectCouple”. (sic)
Another gave their verdict: “The dancing intro to The Perfect Couple on Netflix is so surreal and weird. It’s almost uncomfortable to watch, which oddly enough works really well with the rest of the show.”
All six episodes of The Perfect Couple are available to stream now on Netflix.
