Nicole Kidman felt “very exposed” while filming new erotic thriller Babygirl.
The actress pushed boundaries and discussed her bold new sex scenes at a press conference for the film at the Venice Film Festival. She said the flick is “obviously about sex” but also “about desire, your inner thoughts, secrets, marriage, truth, power and consent.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kidman admitted that Babygirl is the most “exposing” project she’s ever worked on and was unsure if she had the “bravery” to watch the film back. She said: “I’ve made some films that are pretty exposing but not like this,” before saying that filming “left her ragged”.

Nicole also explained: “This is something that you do and hide in your home videos. It is not a thing that normally is going to be seen by the world. I felt very exposed as an actor, as a woman, as a human being.”
She later confessed: “This [film] definitely leaves me exposed and vulnerable and frightened and all of those things when it’s given to the world, but making it with these people here was delicate and intimate. Right now [pre-release], we’re all a bit nervous.”
The Eyes Wide Shut actress said that filming with her co-stars was “really, really intimate” and that “enormous care was taken by all of them” while on set: “We were all very gentle with each other and helped each other.”
“This is one woman’s story and this is, I hope, a very liberating story. It’s told by a woman through her gaze,” explained Kidman. She addressed the fact that Babygirl was written and directed by Halina Reijn: “That’s, to me, what made it so unique because suddenly I was going to be in the hands of a woman with this material. It was very dear to our shared instincts and very freeing.”
As Nicole was working with a female director, she became more comfortable with intimate on-screen moments as she “knew Halina wasn’t going to exploit her”. Kidman “felt very much a part of the story” and “every part of her was committed to that”.
