Paul Mescal’s new project will take over two decades to complete.
The Normal People actor has begun filming Merrily We Roll Along, which is a stage musical that follows three friends over the course of 20 years. The characters’ stories are told from their college days into their middle aged years.
Paul is set to star in the role of Franklin Shepherd, who has a rough relationship with theatre critic Charley Kringas played by Ben Platt. Booksmart’s Beanie Feldstein will also portray Mary Flynn in the epic story.

Mescal’s new movie is an adaptation of the 1934 George Kaufman play, which was later made into a Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim back in the 80s. Despite this, Merrily We Roll Along was met with disappointing reception and only lasted for 16 shows.
Paul, who is currently 28, will be well into middle age himself when the project will allegedly wrap at almost 50-years-old. Director Richard Linklater told The Times: “He’s just a transcendent talent and he can really sing. I’m just so happy we connected on this project, right before he went supernova.”
According to Linklater, the project will be filmed in nine blocks. Richard is best known for his film Boyhood, which was released in 2014 after a whopping 12 year filming schedule. Cinemagoers were transfixed as they watched Ellar Coltrane, who plays main character Mason, blossom into an adult over the course of just 2 hours and 43 minutes.
Reports have said that the film will be finished in 2041 and Linklater will be roughly 80-years-old and according to claims, Mescal has already filmed two instalments of the much anticipated film. Linklater admitted that “mortality crosses his mind” but he isn’t worried as there are “a few other people who could finish it” for him.
For such a massive feat, Richard “didn’t enter lightly” as he decided that taking on such a mammoth, two decade long task would be “the best and perhaps only way to do this story justice on film”.
