Richard Madeley says Judy Finnigan is ‘happy to call it a day’ as he talks future

Richard Madeley has revealed that his wife, Judy Finnigan, is “very happy to call it a day” on her career.

The couple, who have been married for an impressive 38 years and are one of TV’s most iconic duos, have recently adjusted their living arrangements with separate bedrooms to accommodate Richard’s work schedule. Despite this, Judy, who left Loose Women in 2015, has embraced a life away from the limelight.

Speaking to Bella magazine, Richard said: “We were sort of pleased actually. Although, for my money, Judy was the best presenter I’ve ever worked with I think she was gifted as a journalist and TV presenter she never really enjoyed it that much.”

He went on to discuss the pressures of television, particularly for women. The Good Morning Britain stat admitted that Judy found it all burdensome.

“The actual moment, the broadcasting she did, but all the stuff that goes with it, especially for women on telly, she found it a lot of baggage to carry,” he told the Express. “And that’s why she hasn’t come back into it. She’s very happy to call it a day and allow me to do my thing.”

Richard, who was promoting his new novel Father’s Day at Chorleywood Bookshop’s Literary Lunch, also acknowledged that Judy, now 76, continues to play a significant role as his discerning critic. She often shares her insights via WhatsApp from her own bedroom, reports OK!.

Richard and Judy were once the faces of morning television

Richard has hinted at a potential change in his career direction. He admitted: “Breaking news is catnip to me; I still get a huge buzz out of it. But in all seriousness, I feel that my career arc is behind me now.”

He also expressed his intention to continue covering hard news for another two or three years before reassessing. The rollercoaster ride of Richard and Judy’s marriage has often been under the public microscope, with Richard admitting last year that they do have their fair share of arguments.

In one instance, during a holiday in France, a row escalated to such an extent that Judy “didn’t speak” to him for the first two days. The argument was due to the fact he’d forgotten to pack her summer clothes.

Despite these occasional bumps in the road, their marriage remains solid. And the TV power couple are on track to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in just a few short years.
