Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her involvement in the death of Rust movie executive Halyna Hutchins.
The 26-year-old weapons advisor has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after the 42-year-old cinematographer was shot dead in 2021. Hutchins was fatally wounded on set when actor Alex Baldwin fired a prop gun with live ammunition in it.
Baldwin had fired the loaded prop gun from point-blank range during a rehearsal on the set. Gutierrez-Reed had mistakenly loaded live ammunition into a Colt.45 revolver.

Hannah was charged and found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after the prosecution team argued that she failed to maintain a safe working environment, which was integral to her job role.
Live rounds on set are not part of the industry standard and went against safety procedures, claimed the legal team. Prosecutors said: “She had six, six live rounds on that movie set, the earliest date that I can track them for you is October 10.
“Six, and she failed to ferret them out for 12 days. What that means is that she wasn’t shaking any dummy rounds, she wasn’t testing anything.”
Her defense team argued that she was used as a “scapegoat” for others on set. They stated she was facing “harsher” consequences than the others.
The film’s assistant director and safety coordinator Dave Halls testified against Hannah and claimed she did not follow typical safety procedures. Dave said: “She opened up the latch to the revolver, I recall seeing three to four, what I believed to be dummy rounds. I don’t recall her fully rotating the cylinder.”
Hannah is facing up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine after prosecutors requested the maximum sentence. They argued Hannah exhibited “complete and total failure to accept responsibility for her actions.”
