Sabrina Carpenter looks totally unrecognisable as awkward teen in hidden Netflix gem

Please, Please, Please singer Sabrina Carpenter looks worlds away from her pop persona in her previous role in a largely forgotten Netflix flick. The 2020 movie, entitled Work It, sees Sabrina star as awkward teenager Quinn Ackerman.

Sabrina, 25, is known for wearing some very glam get-up – so it’s safe to say she looks very different in the throwback pics from the coming-of-age film.

In the Netflix feature directed by Laura Terruso, Quinn learns her college admission dreams all depend on her performance in a high school dance competition.

She subsequently gathers a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school. There’s just one problem: she actually needs to learn how to dance.

Snaps from the film show a fresh-faced Sabrina wearing almost no makeup and dressed in muted colours. She wears a conservative pale blue cardigan and buttoned-up shirt combination and looks far less glam than usual.

Another picture shows Sabrina looking similarly buttoned-up in a denim shirt with her hair tied back in an untidy updo.

The part is quite different from her other Netflix role in 2019’s Tall Girl, which sees her play pageant queen Harper Kreyman, who is an older sister to protagonist Jodi Kreyman (Ava Michelle).

It is also different to the memorable role she held on the Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, reports the Mirror.

Sabrina starred in 72 episodes of the children’s show, beginning in 2014, as Riley Matthews’ (Rowan Blanchard) best friend Maya Hart.

The synopsis on IMBD reads: “More than a decade after Boy Meets World (1993), Cory and Topanga Matthews are married and have two children.

“Their daughter, Riley, faces life lessons through her family, friends, and school – where her father is her history teacher – as her parents did when they were younger.

As for Sabrina’s more recent Netflix film Work It, viewers gave the flick a mixed reception.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 85% based on 26 reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10.

While over on Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 58 out of 100, based on nine critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.
