Shannen Doherty dead aged 53 as Beverly Hills 90210 star passes away after cancer battle

Actress Shannen Doherty has sadly died at the age of 53 after battling with breast cancer.

The star of 90210 only confessed last month that the past year had been ‘really hard’ for her.

It was publicist Leslie Sloane that confirmed Shannen’s passing. Speaking to People, she sadly shared: “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty.

“The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Shannen was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. The actress, who starred in 90210 and Charmed, was in remission for a short while.

However, the cancer returned again in 2017. Shannen spoke with People about her health after she became ill again. At the time, she candidly shared: “I definitely have days where I say, ‘Why me?’

“And then I go, well, ‘Why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do.”

Shannen’s acting career was kickstarted with her role as Brenda Walsh in the original Beverly Hills, 90210. She starred in the American show from its premiere in 1990 until 1994, where she left in the fourth series.

But, Shannen made a few surprise appearances during the 2008 reboot of the show. The actress managed to continue her long career after her first stint in the American drama.

She was cast in cult TV show Charmed, where she played Prue Halliwell – the oldest sister of the trio of witches.

As well as starring in the popular series, Shannen also directed several episodes – showing off her talent for TV. That was before her 2001 departure from the show in season three.

After building up her acting roles, Shannen set her sights on reality TV. She managed to score her own reality programme, Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty. And even got a chance to star as a contestant on prime time US show, Dancing with the Stars.

Back in 2019, Shannen signed up for another reboot of Beverly Hills – and as the same character that started her long-time career in front of the camera.

At this time, she was of course aware of her cancer diagnosis but decided to keep it from the rest of the cast.

That was until the sudden and tragic passing of co-star and fellow acting legend Luke Perry, who died age 52 in March 2019.

After the passing of Luke, Shannen was compelled to speak about her own health. On Good Morning America, she said: “It’s so weird for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was, you know, seemingly healthy to go first.

“It was really, like, shocking.”

More recently, Shannen has been chatting to a number of celebs on her podcast, Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty. She would chat to guests about all things Hollywood – the highs and the lows.

In a post to Instagram on the 25 June, Shannen discussed being on chemotherapy and shared that she did not know how long she would be on treatment for.

Devastated fans have now fled to the comments to pay their respects to Shannen after the announcement of her passing today.

One wrote: “Oh sweetheart such a huge part of my childhood. What a legend. Rest easy Angel.” Another added: “Fly so high, my friend.”
