Slug-hating Alan Titchmarsh blasts gardening ‘fads and fancies’ as a ‘step backwards’

Alan Titchmarsh says we should stop “rewilding” our gardens.

The slug-hating scourge of North Korea thinks the trend is a backwards step.

And he reckons we should be packing out flower beds with fancy “exotic” blooms instead. He lashed out at “fads and fancies” in the run up to next week’s posh Chelsea Flower Show.

Alan, 75, wrote in Country Life magazine: “Why anyone could think fewer species and varieties could increase biodiversity is beyond me. The variety of today’s show gardens is hugely welcome, as is the appearance of young garden designers with original ideas.

“Less welcome are the fads and fancies that purport to signal the way forward in domestic gardens, but which are in real terms a step backwards.”

The former BBC gardening presenter went on: “If our gardens are to survive global warming, we need to broaden the range of plants we grow, not reduce it.”

His rewilding outburst comes after he doubled down on his hatred of slimy slugs.

And North Korea’s state broadcaster even censored Alan’s jeans – blurring them out on air because they were viewed as too “western imperialist”.
