Super Size Me star who ate McDonald’s every day for a month dies aged 53

Morgan Spurlock, the director of Super Size Me, has died at the age of 53.

The filmmaker was best known for the 2004 film, in which he only ate food from McDonald’s for 30 days. The Oscar-nominated flick saw Spurlock explore the harmful effects of fast food on the body.

He died on Thursday (May 23) in New York following complications of cancer. Confirming his death in a sweet tribute, his brother Craig Spurlock told the New York Post: “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan.

Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Spurlock’s experiment revealed the frightening deterioration in physical and mental wellbeing that can come about as a result of eating junk food. The star also exercised less during the month to match the average America’s physical output.

At the end of the 30 days, Spurlock gained 25 pounds and his body fat increased by 13%. He claimed he’d suffered from depression and liver issues as well as mood swings and sexual dysfunction.

The hit movie, which grossed $22million at the Box Office, impacted McDonald’s as the junk food giant decided to scrap its “super-size” option which had been available at the time. The documentary was shown in schools but did receive criticism as Spurlock refused to share many details of his diet while filming.

A sequel to the hit documentary – Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! – came out in 2017, his last documentary before passing. In it, Spurlock grills the fast food industry’s claims that it’s healthier now and chicken companies making it hard for fast food restaurants to purchase farm-raised chickens.
