Another agreed: “So sad to hear the news about Gudrun Ure. I was very young when this came out, but I loved Supergran. What a star.” A third echoed: “Oh NEVER! How awful! [sad emoji].

“Rest in peace Gudrun #Supergran. The last of the legends, I thought she’ blast through the hundred!” A fourth chimed in with: “Sad news. RIP Supergran. That theme tune is iconic! #Supergran.”

The beloved actress is best known for her role in the high eighties Scottish telly series. Despite being labelled at a granny at the time, Gudrun was just 59 when she starred in the beloved series which aired from 1985 to 1987.

The children’s television series – which inspired two computer games at the time – was based on a grandmother with super powers taken from the books written by Forrest Wilson. Gudrun’s enemy on the show was the Scunner Campbell – played by the late actor and theatre director Iain Cuthberson.

The show was so popular with youngsters that it scooped up an Emmy and was sold to more than 60 countries worldwide. According to director Tony Kysh; “Tyne Tees was one of the first Western companies to sell to China TV where Super Gran was a big success.”

The show also became a huge ratings hut in Cuba in the early 2000s, where the show was redubbed into Spanish. Gudrun also proved to be quite the superhero at the time as she performed many of her stunts herself.

When the star flew on the show, she was lifted high with the help of a huge crane, and used a trampoline for the jumps. Because it was shot in England, the use of local accents sometimes proved to be problematic, with many emphasising their accent to sound more Scottish.

The famous theme tune was performed by Billy Connolly and was released as a single in March 1985 which even reached number 32 in the UK singles chart. There were several other famous faces who took part in the show including George Best, Spike Milligan, Eric Bristow, Roy Kinnear, Geoff Capes and was the last show for actors Patrick Troughton and Charles Hawtrey.

Gudrun, who was born in Campsie, Stirlingshire, also starred in several theatre productions. This included in Orson Welles’ 1951 stage production of Othello as Desdemona and even appeared in the 1953 film 36 Hours at the age of 27 under her stage name Ann Gudrun.

She later appeared in TV shows including T-Bag and the Pearls of Wisdom, Midsomer Murders, Casualty and The Crow Road.
