The Chase fans furious as ITV show abruptly pulled from air in huge shake-up

ITV viewers were fuming after The Chase was pulled from the schedule to make way for a breaking news special.

Fans who tuned in for their daily dose of quizzing were left disappointed on Wednesday (May 22) when ITV News took over the airwaves. It was because PM Rishi Sunak has called a general election to be held on Thursday July 4.

Hosted by journalist Tom Bradby, who was standing outside 10 Downing Street, the news special focused on the Prime Minister’s announcement. But fans of The Chase didn’t like the abrupt scheduling change and headed over to X ro share their grievances.

One disappointed viewer complained: “@ITV get the chase on nobody’ interested in the general election #itv #thechase.” A second fumed: “Have they interrupted normal TV schedules for this s**t? Where is the chase.”

A fourth viewer said: “Can’t believe they’ve cancelled The Chase for this? Bradley Walsh would NOT mess us around like this.”

While a fith echoed: “Right that’s it, where’s the bloody #thechase ? #GeneralElection Rishi best get this over and done with toute suite. I can’t tolerate, Preston and Brady filling for half an hour @ITV. Off to get myself registered to vote. Like now (I’d rather do that).”

During his poignant speech, outside 10 Downing Street in London, Rishi was pelted down with rain and had no umbrella to protect him. While announcing the election next month, Rishi criticised Labour and said: “I don’t know what they offer – and in truth, I don’t think you do either.”

The Prime Minister said that on the day after the election – either he or Labour’s leader Sir Keir Starmer will be prime minister. He then went on to accuse his rival of doing anything to achieve power.

But Rishi also insisted he will fight for every vote. He added: “I will prove to you a Conservative government led by me will not put our economic stability at risk.”

While the Prime Minister gave his message, some of it could hardly be heard as the song, Things Can Only Get Better was blasted loudly in the background. Viewers who noticed the music, headed over to X to comment on this too.

One spectator said: “Not to get too sentimental, but blasting Things Can Only Get Better from a massive speaker while Rishi Sunak tries to announce a General Election is an absolutely superb gag. And makes me genuinely proud to be British.”
