It’s official – Timothée Chalamet’s peachy sex scene in 2017 flick Call Me By Your Name is one of the sauciest movie moments ever.
And it turns out the Wonka star actually got up close and intimate with a piece of fruit to prepare for his role as Elio, alongside Armie Hammer’s Oliver. That controversial scene came way before Emma Stone’s self pleasure using an apple in 2023’s Poor Things, and apparently it actually works.
The scene, which was first depicted in Andre Aciman’s novel, sees Elio have his way with a juicy peach – and it almost didn’t make the movie. But once director Luca Guadagnino tried the technique out for himself, it made it into the final edit after all.

He told Out magazine: “I was tempted to remove it from the script. In the book, it is so strong and explicit that I thought it was a metaphor, something that couldn’t exist in real life. I was struggling with the possibility that you can masturbate yourself with such a fruit.”
But he added: “So I grabbed a peach and I tried, and I have to say—it works.” He wasn’t the only one who sampled the peach before filming started, as Timothée beat him to the punch.
The director explained: “I went to Timothée and said, ‘We shoot the scene, because I tried it and it worked.’ And he said, ‘I tried, too, and I already knew it worked.’”
But despite the scene becoming one of the most iconic in Hollywood history, the star admitted that stripping off on camera “catches the anxiety in his throat”. He explained to Night Viz: “There’s a certain physical requirement to them that’s obviously vulnerable and more than what one usually reveals to another person, let alone in front of a camera to an entire audience.
“Yet when it comes to the day of doing it, it becomes so about doing it honestly […] it’s about establishing very solid boundaries in the doing of the scene. With the peach, conversely, it’s just about focusing purely on the honesty of the moment and you kind of forget about the camera.”

While his co-star Armie Hammer almost turned down the role of Oliver because of the nudity it required, Kylie Jenner’s beau wasn’t fazed by it. He told Variety: “It was never the physical intimacy that was scary, nor was it the type of sexuality that was being professed, but rather, the emotional intensity and the pressure of how well it was described in the book. As a young actor, you don’t come across roles this complex or layered.”
Speaking about the peach scene in particular, Chalamet said: “I was quite nervous about being able to do that in any way believably. The fact that it has made it in and people are curious about it, I’m happy to talk about it.”
