‘Tina Turner gave me the tools to leave my abusive relationship,’ says ’90s legend

Former Livin’ Joy lead singer Janice Robinson has opened up about her bond with Tina Turner.

Best known for her belter track Dreamer, Janice spoke exclusively to the Daily Star ahead of performing twice at London Pride, at the Golden Square and Trafalgar Square stages.

Talking about her love for the late singer, Janice exclusively said: “Tina Turner taught me the blueprint. Tina Turner gave me the tools and the education after watching her at 63 do what she did at 63.

“It was her farewell tour, and the fact that she chose me out of all the artists in 2000, out of anybody, it was me and Lionel Richie. She gave me an opportunity of a lifetime that has stayed with me and if I don’t have to do anything else, I will forever be Tina Turner’s last opening act on her farewell tour.

Janice shared her love for Tina

“I’m good with that. The woman that I idolised, the woman that I looked up to, the woman that everything about her I was inspired by. And what’s crazy is, now, I have a story because I learned from the best.

“She taught me her resilience and that became my resilience to get through the abusive relationship I had to get out of. So there there was trauma and tragedy, but now there’s triumph.

“And so I owe it to Tina Turner to keep standing, to keep paying it forward. To keep finding artists as I’m ageing, young artists that I can open the door for. That’s what it’s about.”

Janice also mentioned how thrilled she was to be performing at London’s Pride weekend. She said: “I am beyond excited. London, England, the UK has put this song Dreamer in such an iconic space. And in the back of my mind, I was like, ‘God, I wish I used my name’. But you know what, everything happens for a reason.”

Janice is also currently working on a dance album to celebrate 30 years since the release of Dreamer. She has recently released singles with London-based record label OMG Collective with ‘Just A Little Love’ and ‘Love Comes Once In Your Life’.
