Vernon Kay hits back at claims he wears ‘padded’ shirts to boost his muscles

Vernon Kay has hit back at claims he uses “padded” shirts to buff up his muscles.

The former Family Fortunes host, 50, was one of thousands who flocked to Wimbledon on Sunday (July 14) to catch the final of the men’s singles tournament. The showdown saw reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz retain his title by defeating Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Kay attended the festivities together with his oldest daughter Phoebe, and the pair were dressed to the nines as they celebrated a true British tradition of tennis. However, attention on the spectacle was drawn away from the match and onto Vernon’s fashion over the course of the day.

Many fans who spotted Vernon courtside remarked that the man’s muscles were on top form. Uploading a series of snaps to his Instagram profile, the presenter’s fashion became the talk of the town as he flaunted his hunky physique.

However, some fans were quick to jump to conclusions that the Radio 2 DJ had some help in highlighting his physique – namely through the use of a padded top. Rushing to the comments section, one fan penned: “Is that a padded t-shirt?” followed by a tennis racket emoji and a laughing face.

A second user piled on: “Got your smedium on, I see! Looking good Vernon.” A third agreed: “Nailed it this morning Vern… defo a smedium.”

The “smedium” fans referenced is a nod to the size of a piece of clothing and how the buyer cops one size too small to highlight the body more. However, on Monday (July 15), Kay was quick to address the rumours and shut them down.

“It’s a strange morning, it doesn’t feel like a Monday morning after the huge weekend of sport,” he explained. “Went to a couple of barbecues, got invited to a big barbecue for the match yesterday.

“I went to Wimbledon, I posted a picture of myself outside Wimbledon outside Center Court and a lot of people did comment on the smedium t-shirt. I went with the smedium. Someone put ‘are you wearing a padded t-shirt there Vern?’ and I went ‘yes, padded full of man’.”

Vernon was just one of a slew of famous faces who showed up to watch the tennis shenanigans over the last week, as Zendaya, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch and Julia Roberts were all spotted courtside watching games. Many fans packed into the complex to watch the final match, which saw Kate Middleton make her second public appearance after being diagnosed with cancer.

Vernon also came under scrutiny from fans who demanded to know how he managed to get a front row seat on Centre Court for the final. In response, he said: “If you got invited to the men’s Tennis final, would you turn down the invite that’s ‘none transferable’?? Not sure you would.”
