Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke reveals ‘secret weapon’ to still performing aged 98

Dick Van Dyke knows how to stay fighting fit at 98 years of age.

The legendary actor – who turned 98 in December – wants to do a one-man show and has revealed he has “a lot of stories to tell”. The Mary Poppins star told PEOPLE: “Eighty years in the business, I have a lot of stories to tell.

“I thought I’d just do a one-man show, like this. Just sit and talk to the audience.” Earlier this month, Dick described his workout routine as his “secret weapon” doing three gym sessions a week.

Dick admitted that he’s had “such a good time” during his decades-long career in the movie business. However, he has revealed he struggles with his short-term memory.

The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor added: “I’m 98. I have almost all my marbles. I can’t remember what I had for breakfast.”

He has no plans to retire but has issues recalling key moments in his career. Dick says he can’t remember his role in 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.

In the film, he played bank manager Mr Dawes Junior. Mary Poppins will remember he famously starred as Bert and Mr Dawes Senior in the original film all the way back in 1964, where he starred alongside the likes of Julie Andrews.

He told Deadline: “I can’t remember what I had for breakfast, but my long-term memory is only getting better.” Asked to share any memories from the time he returned to the Mary Poppins franchise six years ago, he revealed: “I have to be honest, I can’t remember. I really can’t.”

He also returned to TV with a guest part in soap Days Of Our Lives. Dick, who has earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for his latest appearance, said: “I’ve just done my first soap opera, never done that before! I played an old guy, of course, in a wheelchair. My wife [Arlene Silver, 52] played my attendant”.
