Wayne Rooney set to be at centre of a four-way bidding war over new documentary

Coleen Rooney may be the one wowing viewers in the jungle but husband Wayne is making television moves all of his own. The former Man United star is set to be at the centre of a four-way bidding war over a new documentary project.

Disney+, Sky, Netflix and Amazon have all registered interest in the new doc charting his first year as the manager of Plymouth Argyle.

It is set to to be interspersed with footage at home with Coleen and show Wayne’s life as a manager “in the round”, according to insiders.

It’s being made by Lorton Entertainment who have an exclusive deal with the Rooneys, having previously made Coleen’s critically-acclaimed The Real Wagatha Story on Disney.

They were also behind the feature length documentary titled Rooney, about the life of the former England captain, which was released in 2022 on Amazon.

Filming has already started with a production crew spotted at recent matches, including Argyle’s recent 1-0 Championship win against Portsmouth, and their 1-1 draw at Derby County.

Both Wayne and the football club are set to benefit financially by the deal with the streamers all set to put in seven-figure deals in a bid to land the doc.

One source said: “It’s early days but there is already a massive buzz around this project, which will show Wayne the football manager, as well as the family man, and how these two areas of his life co-exist.

“Coleen may be in the jungle with all the cameras on her… but Wayne is just as in the spotlight too, and this project is set to be great news not only for the family coffers, but also Plymouth Argyle who are partners in the vision.”

Rooney, who took over at Argyle in May, has previously only revealed scant details about the doc insisting it would not interfere with the day-to day running of the club.

He said: “They are not around every minute of every day. There will be set days which we give them to film.

“It’s not going to be a massive difference for the players or for the staff to deal with. I think it will be good for the club.”

But he admitted that “big brands” were looking to take it, without disclosing any more information.

The doc follows in the footsteps of previous football club series Welcome to Wrexham featuring owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds on Disney+.

Netflix’s Sunderland ‘Til I Die lasted three series and followed the fortunes of the Black Cats. Premier League Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal have also been the subject of behind-the-scenes documentaries in recent years.

It was revealed last month how the Rooneys were raking it in financially.

Coleen is reported to have received a £1.5million fee for I’m A Celebrity, but that was small change compared to a mega pay day coming her way.

Insiders say she could easily eclipse her husband Wayne’s estimated £80million lifetime earnings after she invested heavily in a company now floated on the Stock Exchange for £350m.

Coleen, 38, bought as many shares as she could in Liverpool sports health firm Applied Nutrition after becoming an ambassador for the brand.

She has also signed up to launch her own range of proteins, collagen and vitamin supplements for the company in January.

Before flying to Australia, she was thrilled to learn that her range would be stocked by Holland & Barrett, with supermarkets to follow.
