EXCLUSIVE: A 90s boyband icon gets emotional as he talks about his brush with “death” after his horrific health battle which saw him lose over 5.5 stone in months
A 90s boyband star has opened up about his “horror” health battle which saw him edge “close to death”.
Bad Boys Inc star All Begg, 52, spoke exclusively to Daily Star as he promoted his YouTube channel which shines the spot light on former pop star icons and look at where they are now.
However, in recent years, the Scottish singer-turned-football broadcaster has now been in great shape himself after suffering from a life-changing battle with ulcerative colitis. Last year, the star’s life was turned upside down after he was hospitalised with the illness which lead to what looked like scenes from a “horror film”.
Ally told us: “I’m on the road to full recovery, but considering where I was this time last year, I was quite close to death. I had my colon removed and I was in a really bad way. I was in intensive care for three days. But look, I’ve come through it, and I’ve had a number of procedures done to combat the disease, but it’s now just a case of just adapting, making sure my body recovers.
“I was in a really bad way. The scariest moment was when I was in a private room and I remember looking at the window, and the snow was falling, and I kind of really felt at peace. I can’t really explain it. It’s a really strange sensation that I had. And then all of a sudden the nurses just come running in and they’re like, ‘Are you OK? Your heart is going mental, the beat is off the scale and your blood pressure’s dropping.’
“Then all of a sudden, the next thing I know, I’m swarmed with nurses, and they’re injecting me with stuff and taking my heart rate, and they’re doing tests on me, and they come in with the bags of blood… The tipping point was the blood…
“When they came in and I saw the size of the bags of blood, it was like a horror film. And that was a little bit of a wake up call.”
Dad-of-two Ally then teared up as he recalled another heart-wrenching moment where his family were braced for the worst before his operation. He added: “Also when they took me down for surgery to remove my colon, now I don’t want to get emotional. Hang on. They said to my ex wife at the time that she needed to prepare, prepare herself and my kids, that I might not come through it… But thankfully I did.
Ally also revealed that he lost over 5.5 stone in weight at his “worst”, which dropped him down to eight stone, which he claimed he hadn’t been since he was a kid. He added: “I got a terrible freight when I first came out of hospital, I caught myself in the mirror, what a freight I got. I couldn’t believe it. It’s just literally skin and bone. Thankfully, I’ve been able to put a little bit of weight back on but it can be quite challenging.”
Ally is now focusing on making a full recovery and growing his own YouTube channel with pop star blasts from the pasts, previous guests have included stars from 5ive, Spandau Ballet, B*Witched and more.
