Adrian Chiles is going on a giant bender around the whole of Ireland.

The TV favourite says he will be going on the pub crawl around the length of the nation, sipping pints of Ireland’s famous Guinness. The Match of the Day 2 presenter has vowed to visit boozers in all 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland and six counties of Northern Ireland.

And the dad-of-two said he was inspired to complete the feat by couple Dale Harvey and Holly Booth who are currently travelling the UK in a bid to visit all 39,000 pubs. They have so far visited around 5,000 – with another 34,000 to go.

But while he is inspired by the duo, Adrian said he will not be putting too much pressure on himself to sink too much of the black stuff.

The former One Show host said he doubt he will make it into all 6,680 pubs in the Republic of Ireland or the 750 in Northern Ireland, but will make sure he sinks between one and four pints in a pub in each of the 32 counties.

Calling it his ‘Stout Pub Challenge’, he said: “Dale Harvey loves pubs so much he’s visiting every single pub in the UK.

“I’ve got news for Dale and Holly, though… having visited just over 5,000 pubs so far, they have about 34,000 to go. At a rate of, say, 20 pubs a week, it’s going to take them more than 32 years.

“For my part, I harbour an ambition to drink a pint of stout in each of the island of Ireland’s 32 counties. This will take either eight, 16 or 32 days, depending on whether I can manage four, two or one pints/counties a day.

“While I’m ironing out the details, please be assured that I’ll be doing it without any higher purpose. It’ll be just for fun. Fun is fine.”

In 2018, Chiles presented a BBC Two documentary called Drinkers Like Me in which he revealed he was downing more than 100 units of alcohol each week – the equivalent of 50 pints.

The beer lover now admits he has “cut down” his drinking around 30 units-a-week these days.

Another star who has tried to drink his way around Ireland is Kiefer Sutherland, who admitted to going on a three-week booze bender across the country as a youngster.

The Flatliners star said he didn’t realise quite how many boozers there were, saying he started off in Dublin, and travelled to County Kerry and then Galway.

He said: “I did a road trip across Ireland that could only have been designed by a young person with a lack of knowledge.

“I planned to go from Dublin to Dingle to Galway and back, stopping at every pub for one drink.

“It became clear after two days that I could visit only one pub in every town.”
