Another Simple Favor is ‘recipe for success’ despite backlash for one key reason

EXCLUSIVE: Another Simple Favor, sequel to 2018’s A Simple Favor, has all the makings of a successful release even though critics have be debating whether a second instalment was “necessary”

Another Simple Favor has all the makings of a successful film thanks to one major detail.

The film is a sequel to the 2018 Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick film A Simple Favor, which follows single mother and parenting blogger Stephanie [Kendrick] who makes friends with upper-class Emily [Lively], whose child attends the same school.

A Simple Favor had a theatrical release but seven years later, the sequel has been released on Prime Video and is facing criticism from film goers who claim there was “no need” to make a second instalment.

Mia Ford from Bad Gal Film Club, a women-centric film community, has spoken exclusively to Daily Star about the effect this decision could have on the film’s success.

She explained: “Another Simple Favor is a recipe for success for streaming – the film benefits from having a built-in audience and can rely on its star power and intrigue, which are sure to draw in audiences who might otherwise skip this one if it was in cinemas.”

“There’s certainly still some stigma around direct-to-streaming releases which may explain why some film fans are quick to write Another Simple Favor off, however streaming audiences are different – they generally expect and embrace major releases at home.”

Mia explained that “success is measured differently on streaming” and the Blake Lively-lead flick has another trick up its sleeve: “Not having to rely on box office numbers as a metric for this film is a great strategic choice by Prime Video, not a compromise.”

Over on Reddit, film fans have been discussing the film’s recent release. One person asked: “Another Simple Favor debuts on Prime Video today. How well do you think it would have done if given a theatrical release?”

One person said: “Difficult to say. On the one hand, Blake Lively just had a success last year with It Ends With Us. On the other hand, [Top Gun] Maverick’s success clearly didn’t translate to additional enthusiasm for [Mission Impossible] Dead Reckoning,” two recent films fronted by Tom Cruise.

“Plus, it’s a very different media landscape in 2025 compared to 2018 and it’s not like the first movie was a mega-hit,” although the Redditor noted that A Simple Favor “did well”.

Someone else said that they think Another Simple Favor “would do ok” with a theatrical release, another Reddit user praised the sequel for being “surprisingly hilarious” while a third said it “kept them hooked throughout”.

However, a number of critics have claimed that the 2018 flick “didn’t need a sequel”.
