Aubrey Plaza appeared on SNL to mark the 50th anniversary of the show, and fans have been left emotional after they spotted what seemed to be subtle tribute to her late husband
Eagle-eyed Aubrey Plaza fans spotted what they believe to be a tribute to her late husband, as the star took part in the SNL 50: The Anniversary Special.
The actress and comedian surprised viewers with an appearance on the show, which comes after the tragic death of her husband, Jeff Baena. Aubrey introduced Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard, while wearing a pink and white tie dye shirt under a black blazer.
Her brief introduction was her first public appearance since the loss of her husband. She did not appear on the red carpet or take part in any of the other special sketches planned for the show.
Fans think the funky top was a sweet nod to her late husband, after Aubrey had previously talked about Jeff’s new-found love of tie-dyeing things over the Covid lockdown. She previously told Drew Barrymore: “We got married on a whim.”
“Literally decided around 5pm, got married at 8:30,” she recalled. “So, Jeff got really into tie-dying during the coronavirus quarantine, so I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pyjamas that he had made for us.”
The Agatha All Along star teamed the tie-dye outfit with a “rosemary crown” for the intimate wedding ceremony in their back yard. “I made, like, a love altar in the backyard of all our love objects [and] it was very witch-core,” she added.
The sad news of Baena’s death broke on January 4, when it was revealed the director had died by suicide at their home at the age of just 47. A spokesperson said at the time: “This is an unimaginable tragedy, we are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support.”
They added: “Please respect our privacy during this time.” She was scheduled to present an award at the 2025 Golden Globes the very next day but understandably cancelled her appearance.
Director Brady Corbet paid tribute to Aubrey and Jeff during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. He said: “Tonight, my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family.”
Fans shared their emotion on social media. One wrote: “Aubrey wearing a tie dyed shirt… if I wasn’t crying already.”
“We are so incredibly proud of you angel. Your strength and courage to appear and do what’s best for you. The tie-dye shirt is beautiful, Jeff was there with you,” added one fan account.
“Aubrey’s wearing tie dye my heart hurts,” said one fan sadly. “I was not expecting to wake up and see this. She’s so strong and I’m so proud of her. The tie dye top as well. Oh she is so loved,” agreed another.
