EXCLUSIVE: Big Brother star Charlie Doherty has given a health update after she received some worrying news this time last year after pushing for answers from the NHS
Big Brother star Charlie Doherty has given an update after being left feeling helpless with her health last year.
The telly star, 40, found out last year that she likely had an acoustic neuroma and was shocked after finding out the news.
As the brand new celebrity series is set to start, Charlie spoke exclusively to Daily Star almost a year on, she told us: “So, it’s stable and I had a six month MRI, when they just check on it, they basically said that all was well.
“But it had grown and it is now 18 millimeters. I did get told originally it was like 13 millimeters, but they said not to go by that measurement, because it was done in a hospital where it’s not very HD.
“Whereas the one at King’s College Hospital was like the creme de la creme, the Rolls-Royce of MRI machines. And they said, ‘We’re not even going to judge it on that first initial one, because it was so grainy, so we don’t really want to go by that.’
“They did initially say that I might have to eventually have brain surgery or camera surgery as well, where they target radio therapy for brain swelling. But they warned that it might make you feel really ill for up to two years, but people take the risk trying to avoid anything worse.”
When talking about what she think may have triggered her illness, the mum-of-one shared: “I sense that my pregnancy triggered it to grow.
“That’s my thought process. But I’ve done a lot of research, and I think it was me getting pregnant and all the hormones, I think that gave me a bit of a growth.
“So I think I’ve had it for years, and it’s just been small enough for me to not get symptoms.”
When talking about her fears, she said: “It’s so different when it’s in your head, it’s not as easy as just say, ‘Look, just get it out.’
“But it is what it is. And hey, you know, at the moment, they’re not too worried, so I’m only going to stress when I actually need to and they say that we’re in a bit of trouble.”
This follows Charlie’s frustrations from last year after she was fed up of being “fobbed off” by medical professionals.
The TV star was suffering from extreme sound sensitivity and beeping noises in her ear, but doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with her.
Eventually, she pushed for a CT scan, which didn’t show any issues, and then firmly put her foot down and pushed for an MRI which found the tumour.
Charlie advised at the time: “If you know there’s something wrong, get a second opinion, and keep pushing for further tests. If I didn’t do that I could be sat here with a brain tumour and not even know anything about it.”
