Britney Spears’ hit song Toxic was inspired by a UK TV star, who is now better known to millions of viewers for his work on the small screen – and fans can’t believe it
Britney Spears fans were astonished to discover that her iconic song “Toxic” was allegedly inspired by a surprising figure.
Released in 2003, “Toxic” is one of Spears’ biggest hits, with lyrics that lash out at a toxic and addictive lover.
However, it has confused fans after coming to light that the song’s co-writer, Cathy Dennis, drew inspiration from her own personal experience with Irish TV vet, Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick, also known as the Supervet, who was the muse for the track.
Fans have talking about this on TikTok this week with one spouting: “My fun fact was that Toxic by Britney Spears was initially written for Kylie Minogue, and then Kylie Minogue turned it down later, calling it the fish that got away, which is not really a saying, but will allow it, because she’s Kylie Minogue.
“Can you imagine the different song that would have occur if Kylie Minogue kind of sang that like it still would have been slay because Cathy Dennis also wrote, can’t get you out of my head, which is crazy, because she also wrote Sweet Dreams by lax about the same guy that she wrote toxic about. Can you know, do you know who it was? It was Dr Fitzpatrick. That’s right. Super fetch. Sion. Toxic by Britney Spears written about Super vet.
According to reports, Dennis dated Dr. Fitzpatrick in the early 2000s, but the two broke up in 2003, the same year “Toxic” was released. The song’s origins were revealed by Pop B*tch, who wrote: “The man who inspired the Britney Spears track Toxic was someone that the song’s co-writer Cathy Dennis had been dating in the early 2000s, who broke up with her in 2003: Noel Fitzpatrick.”
It’s said that Dennis and Dr. Fitzpatrick met when she took her Labrador, Charlie, to his veterinary surgery. This isn’t the first time the rumor has circulated, as This Morning host Holly Willoughby previously questioned Dr. Fitzpatrick about the song’s inspiration.
“Are you who that song is written about? Is it you? Please say yes,” she asked, to which Dr. Fitzpatrick coyly replied: “You may have to ask Kylie Minogue whether ‘I Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ is written about me.”, reports the Mirror.
Phillip Schofield jokingly added: “You clearly have an influence.”
Interestingly, Kylie Minogue had initially turned down “Toxic” before it was offered to Britney Spears. Fans were left gobsmacked by the unexpected revelation and took to social media to express their astonishment.
One fan shared: “Found this fact out this week that it is a song written about C4 “The Supervet” Noel Fitzpatrick by Cathy Dennis. Blew my mind. Ace show, btw.”
Another chimed in: “Todays fun fact! The song “Toxic” by Britney Spears is about Noel Fitzpatrick the Supervet.”
A third echoed: “I’m still not over Toxic being about Noel Fitzpatrick.”
Noel has been a familiar face on our screens, featuring in multiple television series including The Bionic Vet and The Supervet.
