Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has admitted one of his soap co-stars has been bugging him for 25 years during a chat with his Celebrity Big Brother housemates
Jack P Shepherd has admitted that one of his Coronation Street co-stars has been annoying him for 25 years.
The 37-year-old soap star plays fan-favourite David Platt in Corrie and has done since 2000. He had a pivotal part to play in his on-screen mother Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) farewell scenes at the end of last year.
However, there’s another Corrie legend who still calls Jack by his character’s name, even when the cameras aren’t rolling. Ken Barlow actor Bill Roache, 93, has been calling Jack “David” for 25 years, and David isn’t very pleased about it.
Jack revealed his torment in a chat with his Celebrity Big Brother co-stars on Tuesday night (April 23). He decided to call out Bill, Corrie’s longest serving star, in front of the nation and his housemates such as Patsy Palmer and Donna Preston.
EastEnders star Patsy Palmer had been talking about EastEnders icon June Brown, who played Dot Cotton on the BBC soap. “She worked at EastEnders until she was in her 90s,” she said.
Jack replied: “Bill Roach is 93,” as Donna asked “Who’s that?”. Jack proudly shared that he’d been part of Corrie for 65 years, joking: “While I’ve been in here, he could be dead.”
Patsy asked: “Would you find out?” to which Jack responded: “No, why would I find out?”. Chesney said: “You’ve been working with him for 25 years!”
He then added: “That don’t matter. I’ve known him for 25 years, he still calls me f****** David. He meets me in the corridor and I’m like ‘morning Bill’, and he goes ‘Ah, David’.”
But it’s clear he sees the funny side of it as he couldn’t help laughing at being called the wrong name. Whether it really is a blunder by Bill or a way to wind up David (sorry, Jack) may remain a mystery.
Chesney Hawkes, sticking up for Bill, said: “He is 93,” with Donna adding: “That’s genius.” Fans on social media were in hysterics at the story, with one writing: “I think there’s a bit of Bill Roach in all of us, I’ve seen more tweets calling him David Platt than I have Jack.”
Jack confessed to twisting the producers’ arms after realising Gail’s final scene on Corrie didn’t involve the whole on-screen clan.He recalled: “Her last scene filming was in the Platts with me and Julia [Shona].
“And I went ‘No, no, her last scene she films has to with be all of us’. And they were like ‘there isn’t one where you’re all together’ and I was like ‘Well write one!’
“So they did they write one, and I went ‘We don’t have to do anything, just make sure we’re all together in the Platts. Please, for when she finally goes, don’t just have someone random with her.’ And luckily they were able to do it and schedule it so we were all together.”
He added: “It was very emotional for the whole building. There were 500 people in the studio who came down to say goodbye, I’ve never seen that before.”
