Colin Firth’s character Mark Darcy is killed off in the new Bridget Jones movie – and author Helen Fielding has recalled the actor’s ‘savage’ response to the bombshell
Colin Firth has voiced his thoughts on his character’s absence in the new Bridget Jones film after being killed off off-screen. Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy has finally hit cinemas, but sadly without Colin Firth reprising his role as Mark Darcy.
The sequel sees Renee Zellweger return as Bridget Jones, who is now a widow following the unexpected death of Mark. However, if Bridget was a real person, it was recently revealed that her diet might kill her as well.
In the film, it’s revealed that Mark, a human rights lawyer, was killed. Colin Firth reacts to the fate of his Bridget Jones character in the new sequel. The couple got hitched in 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby, and fans believed the character had finally received her deserved happy ending.
Until now.
Prior to the film’s release, author Helen Fielding recounted breaking the sad news to Colin.
However, she never actually planned to kill him, she confessed to Variety. “Well the truth is, I didn’t ever intend to actually kill Colin,” she admitted.
“When the book came out, it was the second lead after Syria on BBC News: ‘Mark Darcy is dead!’
“I’d had to previously call Colin up and ask if he had someone with him and if he was sitting down, and I told him that I’d killed him,” she said. Recalling his ‘savage’ response, Helen remembers Colin telling her: ‘You’ve killed the wrong one.'”
After the heartbreaking loss of Mark, solo mum Bridget is thrust back into the chaos of the dating world, determined to find love once again, reports the Mirror. But as we all know, it’s never straightforward for our gal Bridget; she’s tangled up with not one, but two potential romances – hunky Roxster (played by Leo Woodall) and her kids’ teacher Mr Wallaker (the brilliant Chiwetel Ejiofor). Leo Woodall, the 28-year-old known from White Lotus and Netflix’s One Day, recently stood his ground defending the age-gap love story in the flick between his character and the fabulous 55-year-old Renee.
Chatting about the “controversial” romance with Stellar Magazine, Leo touted: “When two people find the connection, why shouldn’t they see where it goes without judgment? Both dynamics should be equally normalised. It’s a good thing that we’re getting the reverse.”
