Disgraced singer R Kelly was allegedly hospitalised after an overdose, his lawyers claim.
The 58-year-old musician is behind bars at the Federal Correctional Institute facility in Butner, North Carolina. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2021 after being found guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering, which involved underage children an#d women.
A legal filing from Kelly’s attorney Beau B. Brindley on Tuesday (June 17) claims that he was sent to hospital after overdosing last week after prison staff gave him more medication than he usually takes. Kelly’s lawyers allege staff at the prison gave him an “overdose quantity” that exceeded his normal anxiety and sleep medication dosages.
According to TMZ, the filing claims that the music mogul – real name Robert Sylvester Kelly – was given the near-fatal dose on June 12 while Kelly was placed in solitary confinement. This led to the rapper being hospitalised on Friday (June 13).
The court documents claim prison staff also took him off necessary blood thinner medication and is refusing to allow him surgery to clear blood clots in his lungs and legs. It alleges he was then “forcibly removed” from Duke University Hospital in North Carolina against medical advice.
The singer’s legal team claim he was left “bedridden” in hospital after the overdose. The outlet reports that he woke up feeling “faint” and “dizzy” the next morning and “crawled to the door of the cell and lost consciousness”.
Kelly was convicted of sexually abusing children and women in 2021. US District Judge Ann Donnelly said the singer had an “indifference to human suffering” and had used sex as a weapon, forcing his victims to do unspeakable things while saddling some with sexually transmitted diseases.
She said: “You taught them that love is enslavement and violence,”
The singer’s health has declined during his time behind bars. Blood clots were discovered in his legs which required surgery to be performed on his Achilles tendon.
In new audio obtained by RapHouseTV, Kelly claimed he is ‘scared for his life’, stating: “I don’t deserve to die because somebody miscommunicated or somebody took a guess at what’s going on with my leg. I’m not supposed to die this way. You’re not even supposed to take a chance on that.”
He went on: “Because if it was your child, if it was your father, if it was your mother, somebody you loved, you would’ve said, ‘Go to the doctor. We need to get that checked out. We need to look at that. We need to X-ray that’.
“They didn’t even X-ray. And that’s why I’m speaking out on this, because I’m scared for my life in that area. And who wouldn’t be. They treat animals better than that.”
An Assistant United States Attorney, per TMZ, said the singer likes to paint himself as the victim, adding: “This is the behavior of an abuser and a master manipulator on display.”
