Emmerdale fans are sure a soap icon will be making a comeback soon in a bid to take down John Sugden
Emmerdale fans are convinced that a soap legend could be returning to take down John Sugden.
John (played by Oliver Farnworth) made his first appearance last year, arriving in the Dales as the alleged long-lost son of Jack Sugden (portrayed by Clive Hornby). He quickly made an impact on the locals.
Since then, John has settled into village life, sparking a romance with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) and getting acquainted with his distant family members, including sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins).
However, things took a dramatic turn last month when Aaron assaulted abuser Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day), spurred on by memories of his own childhood assault. After leaving him for dead, Aaron confessed his actions to John – who stepped in to protect Aaron and vowed to help dispose of Anthony’s body.

It later emerged that it was Anthony’s daughter Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly) who killed him – with several other villagers now implicated in the murder cover-up, including Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) and Cain (Jeff Hordley). However, John has since kept the location of Anthony’s body a secret, fearing that those in the know risk exposure if he revealed it.
Moreover, amidst all the Anthony Fox drama, fans have also questioned John’s true character. They suspect he could be a covert serial killer, following the shocking discovery of a deceased Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) in a frozen lake, reports Leeds Live.
Fans of Emmerdale have been on edge with the tense dynamics between characters John and Aaron, with many accusing John of being “controlling” towards Aaron and even resorting to gaslighting. Now, rumours are swirling among viewers that John may be ripe for a takedown, and it’s speculated that a beloved character could reveal his true colours.
On an Emmerdale fan Facebook page, there’s been chatter, with one saying: “I still don’t trust John, there’s just something about him. I feel he’s the type of person that will hold the Anthony murder secret against the Dingles.”
In the comments, fans whipped up a theory that Debbie Dingle might make a dramatic return, with one hopeful viewer commenting: “Hopefully someone will come back and sort him out.” Another pitched in, “I want Debbie to return.” And yet another added, “Oh yes Debbie would be good.”
Fans fondly remember Debbie Dingle, played by Charley Webb, as a soap fixture since her 2002 debut. As Cain’s daughter, she was at the heart of numerous major plots until leaving screens in 2021.
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
