Fans of ITV’s Emmerdale believe that the soap has dropped a big hint about the character John Sugden, who a lot of viewers have long suspected has a very dark past
Emmerdale fans are convinced John Sugden is set to take centre stage after spotting a big clue.
Viewers have noticed that the image of the soap on ITVX had been showing Joe and Caleb, but that it has now been updated to show John (Oliver Farnworth). Dark and haunting, the side profile of the mysterious character has got people wondering if something sinister about John is going to be revealed.
John turned up in the ITV soap last summer and it emerged that he and Victoria Sugden have the same dad, making them half siblings. Since then, he has become involved with Aaron Dingle and recently saved his life at an illegal boxing match.
But despite his good deed, alarm bells have been ringing and viewers are convinced John has a seriously murky past. In recent weeks there have been hints at a dark side, with viewers gripped as John helped cover up Anthony’s death.
Plus it seems he is connected to what happened to Nate. While Nate was thought to have left the Dales, it started to become clear that his was the body spotted floating in a frozen lake. And with John apparently the last person to see him alive, he is now under a cloud of suspicion.

With all the odd signs about John and the fact that the ITVX picture has changed, viewers are now predicting that something big is coming. One wrote on Reddit: “I noticed they’ve changed the Emmerdale poster on ITVX to a very mysterious Netflix/true crime style image of John.
“Are they hinting that we’ll finally get some movement on the character? Has it happened already and I’m just behind?”
They went on: “I was dubious about the killer John theories. But this poster now makes me think there might be something to it.”
Someone else chimed in: “Well, they’ve given it away, he murdered Nate.” The other user replied: “It seems like it, unless it’s a red herring. That’s a lot of effort to go to for a poster though when his only story this last week or so is ‘Why doesn’t Chas like me’.”
Sharing a screengrab of the image, another fan asked on X: “Hmm! Are we finally going to see the beginning of John in his villain era?”
“Going on the theory that John is a killer who is his next victim??” asked another viewer. “I’m saying Jai or Gail because she’s leaving,” they added.
Someone else wrote: “So new picture for Emmerdale on ITVX. Are we actually going to get evil John? If this doesn’t scream villain I don’t know what does. I’m actually excited for this. Don’t let me down Emmerdale.”
