Police have now confirmed Gene Hackman’s wife was alive for a full 24 hours longer than they initially said.

New evidence in the investigation into the Hollywood couple’s death showed that Betsy Arakawa made multiple calls to a Santa Fe medical centre on February 12. This was 24 hours after she was initially believed to have passed away on February 11. The new revelation made by Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department brings the other announcements made over the past couple of weeks into question.

“We can now confirm that Mrs. Hackman’s phone was utilized on the morning of February 12 to call a medical center in Santa Fe, Cloudberry Health,” authorities told Fox News.

“A total of three calls were made that morning, all to the medical centre. One incoming call was made to Mrs. Hackman from the same medical centre that afternoon.

“That appeared as a missed call on Mrs. Hackman’s cell phone.”

Previously, a claim was made by Dr. Josiah Child, a former emergency care specialist who runs Cloudberry Health, that Betsy had an appointment made for February 12, a day after her supposed death. He also said he spoke to her weeks before.

“She made an appointment for herself for February 12. It was for something unrelated to anything respiratory,” Dr Child said.

He added Betsy had also cancelled the appointment a few days before, saying her husband’s health had taken a turn. From this, Dr Child has questioned her death and suggested there might be more to it.

“It is surprising that Mrs. Hackman spoke to my office on the phone on February 10 and again on February 12 and didn’t appear in respiratory distress,” he said.

“Most patients who have hantavirus die in hospital.”

According to the Santa Fe medical examiner, Betsy died from hantavirus, a scarce rat-borne illness, on February 11 – a whole week before Hackman’s death due to heart failure and Alzheimer’s disease complications.

Dr Child told The Mail on Sunday: “Mrs Hackman didn’t die on February 11 because she called my clinic on February 12.”

He detailed further: “She’d called me a couple of weeks before her death to ask about getting an echocardiogram [heart scan] for her husband. She was not a patient of mine, but one of my patients recommended Cloudberry to her. She made an appointment for herself for February 12. It was for something unrelated to anything respiratory.”

Betsy was tragically discovered on the bathroom floor of the couple’s Santa Fe home. Gene was found lifeless on a utility room floor, with his pacemaker indicating he passed away on February 18.

A post-mortem examination revealed an empty stomach, suggesting that due to his Alzheimer’s, Gene might not have realised his wife of 34 years had passed away.

Adding to the heartbreak, one of their three dogs, which was crated while recovering from surgery, also perished from starvation and dehydration.
