Michelle Trachtenberg’s cause of death has been confirmed, two months after the Gossip Girl star was tragically found dead at her apartment in New York City
US actress Michell Trachtenberg was found “unconscious and unresponsive” in her New York Apartment in February.
Authorities in New York have confirmed the cause of death of the actress, two months after she was found deceased in her New York City apartment at the age of 39. According to reports from TMZ, the medical examiner has determined that Michelle died from complications related to diabetes, specifically “complications of diabetes mellitus”.
The lab results did not specify whether Michelle had type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This update comes after it was reported that Michelle’s family had declined an autopsy and her death was “undetermined”.
In February, Michelle was tragically found dead at a residential location in New York.
Emergency services responded to a call at One Columbus Place in New York, where Michelle was pronounced dead at the scene. A source told People shortly after her passing that Michelle had confided in close friends about her struggles with her physical and emotional health in the year leading up to her death.
The source revealed: “She was really, really sick and was open with those close to her about her struggles,” also noting that she appeared “pale, gaunt, and very thin.”
Michelle was an Orthodox Jew, and her family had refused an autopsy on religious grounds.
The film and TV star, renowned for her roles as Georgina Sparks in the popular teen drama Gossip Girl and Dawn Summers in the iconic supernatural series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was only 39 when she died. Her death was announced on Wednesday, shocking fans who had recently voiced concerns over her frail appearance in social media posts prior to her death.
A spokesperson for New York’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner explained that, under public health law, families can refuse an autopsy for religious reasons. Unless there is suspicion of foul play or a significant public health concern.
A source revealed to People that Trachtenberg had confided in friends about her emotional and physical struggles in the year leading up to her death.
“She was really, really sick and was open with those close to her about her struggles,” the insider shared. They also described her as appearing “pale, gaunt, and very thin.”
In a candid post last year, she hit out: “I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters.”
