Halle Berry and Adrien Brody recreated their infamous Oscars kiss on the red carpet at the 97th Academy Awards, with Berry joking that she was getting “payback”
Over two decades on from their iconic Oscars moment, Halle Berry and Adrien Brody have given us a blast from the past at the 97th Academy Awards, recreating their famous kiss for the cameras – but this time it was on the red carpet.
The nostalgic peck happened right outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, just before the film industry’s glitziest night kicked off, which has also been hailed the “most boring” to date. Halle, 58, cheekily approached Adrien, 51, and gave his girlfriend a heads-up with “I’m sorry, Georgina, but I have to do it”, before leaning in for a playful smooch with the actor, echoing their notorious 2003 Oscars clinch.
The fun moment, which was the first of many on the night, had onlookers, including Adrien’s partner, British fashionista and actress Georgina Chapman, cheering and clapping along. Georgina was once married to disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and shares two children with him, Dash and India.
Halle, dazzling in a silver and black sequined gown, later took to Instagram to tease about the encounter, posting: “Surpriseee @adrienbrody! I had to get some payback.” This reunion harks back to one of the most buzzworthy Oscar moments ever.
Back in 2003, Adrien bagged the Best Actor gong for his performance in The Pianist, becoming the youngest ever male winner of that award at the tender age of 29. Halle, who’d snagged the Best Actress award the previous year for Monster’s Ball, was handing over the trophy when Adrien left her – and everyone watching – gobsmacked by going in for an impromptu kiss, reports the Mirror.
Halle was totally gobsmacked, and she later confessed she was blindsided by the event. “I was like, ‘What the f*** is happening right now?'” she recounted on Watch What Happens Live years after the incident.
Adrien, on his end, has admitted over time that the kiss was totally off-the-cuff and has stated he never intended to make Halle feel awkward. Fast forward to this year, and the vibe was completely different, with Halle owning the moment.
Their cheeky red carpet rendezvous quickly became one of the most chattered-about events of the evening, with social media abuzz over the unexpected red carpet reenactment. But that was just the start of an auspicious evening for Adrien, who was in the running for Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist.
Directed by Brady Corbet, the film chronicles the life of a Hungarian-Jewish immigrant and architect in post-World War II America.
