Harry Potter reboot’s first look at new boy wizard as HBO series starts filming

HBO has shared a first look at the highly anticipated Harry Potter TV reboot as filming gets underway, including a glimpse of Dominic McLaughlin dressed up as the boy wizard

HBO has shared a first look at the new Harry Potter TV reboot – and our new boy wizard.

The new series, based on JK Rowling’s beloved books, will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. And HBO have now given fans a glimpse at the boy wizard and announced filming is now underway.

A new photo shows the 11-year-old actor dressed as Harry, sporting the character’s famous glasses, black Hogwarts robes and red Gryffindor uniform. The young actor smiled for the camera in the shot, which showed the cameras have started rolling.

HBO has also announced new cast members joining the young lead, including Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley. Sherlock star Louise Brealey will play Quidditch coach Madam Hooch and Andor’s Anton Lesser will play wandmaker Mr Ollivander.

They’ll be appearing alongisde the previously announced Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The show is shooting at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK.

Executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod were full of praise for the three young actors playing the main trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione. In May, they said: “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.

“We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

Daniel Radcliffe played Harry in the films, alongside Rupert Grint as Ron and Emma Watson as Hermione. The last film, Deathly Hallows Part Two, came out in 2011.

HBO has also unveiled several new department heads for the series, including Director of Photography Adriano Goldman, Hair and Makeup Designer Cate Hall, Stunt Coordinator Paul Herbert and SFX Supervisor Mark Holt. Mara LePere-Schloop has signed up as Production Designer, Naomi Moore is Set Decorator, John Nolan is Creature Effects, Alexis Wajsbrot is VFX Supervisor and Dom Sidoli is VFX Producer.

Holly Waddington is the show’s costume designer, with the reboot written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod, who previously directed several episodes of HBO’s hit drama Succession, is directing the series.

The star-studded cast of the HBO show includes Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Luke Thallon as Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Filch.

American actor John Lithgow will play Hogwarts headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore, while Johnny Flynn will play Lucius Malfoy. Newcomer Lox Pratt has landed the role of Draco Malfoy, with Bertie Carvel taking on the part of Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge. Katherine Parkinson will portray Molly Weasley, Ron’s mother.

Harry’s aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley, will be played by Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby. The reboot is said to be airing in 2027.
