Singer Katy Perry was recently shot into space as part of a milestone all-female crew and eagle-eyed viewers spotted something they thought indicated the entire trip was “faked”
Trolls claim Katy Perry’s trip to space was faked after spotting something odd in the blast-off footage.
The Firework singer kissed the Earth and broke down in tears after floating in micro-gravity during a 10 minute and 21 second trip aboard a rocket-propelled Blue Origin craft.
After the New Shepard capsule touched down in the US desert, space firm founder Jeff Bezos wrenched open the hatch with a specialised tool to greet the six-strong all-female crew – including emotional I Kissed A Girl singer Katy.
However, conspiracy theorists spotted live footage minutes earlier which they claimed showed the capsule door being opened from the inside before being hastily closed. They hailed it “definitive proof” that the mission was staged.
One tweeted: “I’d say this is the nail in the coffin. FAKE!” while another wrote: “It was fake. The girls opened the door to begin with from the inside with no tools.”
“They then waited a few minutes and Jeff Bezos stepped up with some sort of tool and acted like he unlocked the latch.”
Someone else chimed in: “Can’t post this fake s*** enough. Door opens from the inside, they’re told to close it because the door can ONLY be opened by an outside person.”
One more added: “Pretty sure pressurised doors don’t open inwards. The capsule looks like it’s an inflatable tent and the only footage they showed was the `weightlessness’ part which you can achieve in a plane.”
Despite the convincing theories, space experts said the conspiracy claims did not stack up and the most likely explanation for the door gaffe was that it would spoil a photo op. The capsule only went up 66.5 miles – just above the Kármán line which is the internationally-recognised boundary of space.
At that altitude, it was not exposed to the true vacuum of space, meaning it was not necessary for the capsule to have reinforced outward-opening doors like crafts travelling 250 miles back from the International Space Station.
Since it barely left the atmosphere, the capsule’s return to Earth did not create the heat of a typical re-entry burn that would have scorched the exterior. Following the Apollo 1 disaster, in which a capsule burst into flames on the launch pad, it has been standard practice for them to have doors which open from both sides.
NASA’s safety requirements state “doors shall be operable by a single crew member in no more than 60 seconds from both sides of the hatch.” Once the capsule had depressurised upon, landing there was nothing to stop Katy and the crew opening the door from inside.
Dr Daniel Jolley, an expert on the psychology of conspiracies from the University of Nottingham, said: “Space is vast, complex, and largely inaccessible to most people.”
“In this context it becomes easier for some individuals to question the official narrative. Space missions have historically attracted scepticism from Moon landing denial to flat Earth claims.”
Professor Karen Douglas, an expert on conspiracy theories from the University of Kent, added: “People are looking for ways to understand what is going on and they don’t like the uncertainty that often surrounds unfolding events.”
“This perspective essentially means that anyone can fall into conspiracy theories if the circumstances are right.”
